Job description

Role Overview

This position calls for a hands-on mechanical supervisor with strong aviation maintenance experience, focused on aircraft transparencies and oxygen bay activities. The role is responsible for keeping aircraft airworthy through proper delegation, authorisation, and oversight of maintenance work. It also involves leading people, coordinating tasks, and ensuring delivery targets are met at a tactical level.

The successful candidate should be able to work across broader operational dependencies, identify opportunities for improvement, and demonstrate leadership, sound communication, and strong judgement in a regulated maintenance environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Carry out and oversee detailed inspection and maintenance work on aircraft transparencies and oxygen bay components.
  • Supervise the team so planned maintenance stays on schedule, raise concerns early, and escalate issues when needed, including any effect on the wider programme.
  • Confirm that assigned staff are qualified and approved for the work they are given, and maintain personal and team task authorisations in line with AMC requirements.
  • Deliver short- to medium-term output targets through effective supervision, and provide progress updates to management.
  • Offer direction and leadership to team members, including support through formal assessments such as PDRs and training requests, as well as on-the-job training.
  • Communicate clearly when sharing complex technical or people-related information.
  • Plan and perform independent inspections where required.
  • Keep personal logbooks current to show recency and competency, and sign off others’ logbooks when appropriate within trade and skill limits.
  • If authorised as a designated assessor, complete competency approvals, authorisation checks, and review Pt 145 licence application packs before submission.
  • Perform maintenance and diagnostic work on Typhoon transparencies and oxygen components, including inspections, repairs, modifications, fault rectification, and replacements.
  • Show a flexible, proactive approach and follow direction appropriately.
  • Provide progress reporting to the supervisor against agreed delivery targets.
  • Complete support duties in the transparencies and oxygen bay needed to maintain MOE and QAF compliance, including oversight checks and control of tooling and test equipment.
  • Investigate faults and raise ad hoc work cards for issues discovered during maintenance.
  • Ensure all maintenance work is documented correctly and that airworthiness records are updated in both digital and paper systems.
  • Prepare required reports, highlight issues, and escalate them as needed.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage regulatory activities effectively by setting delivery targets, tracking progress, and building performance improvement plans.
  • Prioritise work across teams to improve efficiency.
  • Assess escalated issues for any impact on continuing airworthiness and resolve them or escalate to management where appropriate.
  • Follow all regulatory procedures, standards, and company requirements, and recommend improvements when needed.
  • Ensure all Part 145 work is properly recorded and that airworthiness documentation is kept current on relevant systems.
  • Make sure only suitably qualified, experienced, and authorised people carry out Part 145 work.
  • Support integration of Part 145 activity into the wider business and involve key stakeholders throughout the process.
  • Promote human factors, error management, risk management, and safety assurance within the team.
  • Support audits, process confirmations, and assurance activities, and respond promptly to findings with corrective actions.
  • Implement improvements to address non-compliance and monitor whether they are effective.
  • Understand and apply the continuing airworthiness regulatory framework and support any regulatory-driven changes.
  • Ensure compliance with additional requirements such as ITAR, EaPW, and ISO.
  • Meet all contractual obligations.

Requirements

  • Completion of an engineering apprenticeship, ideally in aeronautical engineering, or an equivalent military apprenticeship or qualification.
  • Minimum academic qualification of City & Guilds 2675 or 2661 in Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance, or an equivalent credential.
  • At least 2 years of experience at technician level before moving into a supervisor role.
  • Proven leadership ability at supervisor level, supported by current and recent experience recorded in a logbook covering aircraft or bay-related skills, knowledge, and authorisations.
  • Practical experience applying aviation safety standards and safe working practices.
  • Training in on-the-job instruction techniques.
  • Strong technical knowledge in the relevant product area, with awareness of how the team connects with other functions and a clear understanding of continuous improvement.
  • Typhoon Mechanical Trade 'Q' Course or an equivalent qualification.
  • Compliance with risk assessments, SHE policies, and procedures.
  • Human Factors standard course completion.
  • E&PW awareness standard course completion.
  • ITAR awareness standard course completion.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Valid UK driving licence.

Additional Information

This role requires the holder to maintain airworthiness, support compliance with maintenance governance and assurance frameworks, and work within a highly regulated aerospace environment.
