Job description

Role overview

NHS England is looking for a capable and committed individual to take on the Training Programme Director – Anaesthetics Pan Deanery ICM post. This position is offered as a secondment to NHS England and is paid on the NHS Consultant Pay Scale at 1.38 PA, equivalent to five and a half hours each week. All duties from this role must be included within the Consultant Job Plan.

The Training Programme Director works alongside and supports the Head of School in delivering a broad range of responsibilities aligned to the NHS England mandate. The post carries professional and managerial accountability to the Head of School.

The main emphasis of the role is to strengthen learner supervision, assessment and overall experience, improve engagement with faculty, and help secure strong educational outcomes both now and in the future. The position is also developing to include whole-workforce transformation, stronger multi-professional connections, innovative curriculum delivery, and strategies that support workforce wellbeing.

Training Programme Directors support the Postgraduate Dean by working across health and, where relevant, social care as part of a wider team. This helps ensure education provision adapts to changing service models and supports an integrated workforce drawn from diverse professional backgrounds.

Engagement and key relationships

The post requires building and maintaining effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders at local, regional and national levels. Key relationships include the Postgraduate Dean, Head of School, staff across the local office area, practices and schemes, associate and deputy deans, clinical faculty, other Heads of School, other Training Programme Directors where relevant, Royal Colleges, professional and regulatory organisations, the wider stakeholder network, local medical and dental schools, regional providers and commissioners, Directors of Education, and higher education institutions.

Core functional responsibilities

The role includes maintaining high standards of education and training in line with the General Medical Council and other national bodies for training posts and educational programmes across Yorkshire and the Humber. It also involves supporting the national vision, policies and processes for effective education quality management, helping ensure objectives are delivered within budget, contributing appropriately to savings when needed, ensuring Code of Practice guidelines are followed, and providing accurate advice to trainees on out of programme, inter deanery transfer, less-than-full-time training, and acting up applications.

Additional information

This role sits within NHS England, an organisation with statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers that support the wider NHS in delivering high-quality care and other services best delivered once for the whole health system. The organisation brings together expertise in clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education and commercial disciplines.

In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly combine functions, with the intention that NHS England will ultimately be fully integrated into the department.

If you currently work in the NHS and are successful at interview, an Inter Authority Transfer will be started through the Electronic Staff Record system to obtain key onboarding information such as competency status, continuous service dates and annual leave entitlement. You may choose to opt out at any point.

For colleagues with a contractual office base, the expectation is to spend at least 40% of working time in the office on average.

Visa sponsorship is not available for this vacancy.
