Job description
About the organisation
Awanui Labs is part of Awanui Group, New Zealand’s largest network of human and veterinary pathology laboratories. The organisation operates nationwide with 25 laboratories, 150 collection centres, and more than 2,200 employees across Aotearoa. Its specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, couriers, and shared-services teams support the collection, testing, and reporting of more than 7 million patient results each year.
About the role
The Patient Services team is looking for a motivated Trainee to join on a casual basis in Auckland. This role is based across the CMDHB Cluster 1B collection centres in Manurewa, Clendon, Manukau, Mangere, and Onehunga. The position provides practical, hands-on exposure to patient-facing work and contributes to the delivery of efficient, high-quality community healthcare services.
Applicants may be trainees or people with prior experience in phlebotomy, medical, or medical science environments. Preference may be given to candidates already located within the Manurewa, Clendon, Manukau, Mangere, and Onehunga area, with the understanding that work may be required across all three collection centres as needed.
Key duties
The role centres on blood collection and the safe handling of contained specimens such as human blood, faeces, urine, and tissue. You will also prepare specimens for transport and act as a professional point of contact between patients, health professionals, and the laboratory.
What we are looking for
Success in this role requires a warm, respectful, and culturally sensitive manner, along with genuine care for people of all ages and circumstances. Strong customer service, excellent personal presentation, accuracy, and the ability to work carefully under pressure are essential. You must also respect patient privacy at all times and have solid computer skills.
Registration with the Medical Science Council, along with an Annual Practising Certificate as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician in Patient Services, is preferred but not mandatory. If you are not already registered with the Medical Science Council of New Zealand, support will be provided to help you work toward Qualified Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician status within two years of employment.
Applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand.
Values and workplace
The team’s culture is guided by three values: Manaakitanga, which reflects caring for one another and the people served; Whakapakari, which focuses on improvement and adaptation to create opportunities for success; and Hiranga, which means delivering the highest standard of medical and scientific expertise.
The laboratory environment is highly automated and technologically advanced, and the role offers access to in-house learning and development support to build professional capability and progress your career.
Additional information
This is a casual role. The application closing date is 14 July 2026.
