Job description
Role overview
Wilmar Sugar & Renewables is hiring a Traffic Officer to support the smooth and safe movement of cane trains in Ingham, Queensland. The role sits at the centre of rail coordination, combining operational oversight with GPS-based tracking, scheduling systems, automation tools, and data analysis to keep raw materials and finished product moving efficiently.
This is a permanent position within Cane Supply and Transport. During the crushing season from June to December, the job involves shift work, weekends, and overtime. From January to May, the work pattern changes to daytime hours for the maintenance period.
The position is based in North Queensland’s Herbert Region, an area known for a relaxed lifestyle and access to beaches, fishing, boating, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate train timetables and day-to-day rail activity to help maintain a dependable cane flow to the mill and support uninterrupted production.
- Manage the safe and efficient movement of trains across the Herbert Region rail network, including changes to locomotive schedules when required.
- Track train operations using live GPS, control systems, and automation tools to reduce delays and keep scheduling accurate.
- Use data and analytics to anticipate issues, improve scheduling, respond to changing conditions, and monitor team performance.
- Apply smart safety systems to oversee rail assets and train conditions, and react quickly if any irregularity is detected.
- Supervise team members, handle related administration, and organise hands-on training for locomotive crews while maintaining quality standards and records.
- Communicate through cloud-based platforms and mobile applications with train drivers, production teams, logistics staff, growers, contractors, and external organisations about bin allocations, harvesting details, and operational updates.
- Use simulation or digital twin-style tools to test scenarios and refine operating decisions in a controlled environment.
What you need to succeed
Success in this role depends on a strong grasp of cane supply and transport operations, a firm commitment to safety, clear communication, and the ability to share accurate performance updates. The employer is looking for someone who can adapt as processes evolve, work confidently with technology, and operate with an intermediate level of computer literacy. A manual C-class driver’s licence is required.

Wilmar says it values each team member’s contribution and provides a supportive environment built around safety and innovation. The benefits mentioned include competitive pay, additional leave, superannuation entitlements, and partner discounts.
