About the role
Downer is recruiting experienced Traffic Controllers to support the Ōtaki to north of Levin (Ō2NL) highway project in Wellington. This major infrastructure programme is designed to improve road safety, resilience, efficiency, and travel choices for a growing community. The project is being delivered in partnership with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, local hapū of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, and Horowhenua District Council.
The work is being carried out through a two-alliance delivery model. Downer is part of the South Alliance with McConnell Dowell, Beca, and Tonkin + Taylor as Non-Owner Participants. The South Alliance scope covers the route from Ōtaki to south of the Ōhau River.
This opportunity suits dependable, safety-minded people who want to contribute to a nationally significant transport project while working within a collaborative alliance environment.
Key duties
- Install, maintain, and dismantle temporary traffic management setups
- Track traffic movement and help protect motorists, pedestrians, and work crews
- Use Stop/Go paddles and control vehicles moving through active work areas
- Support site checks and make sure traffic plans are being followed
- Assist the wider team with general site tasks when needed
What we are looking for
- Prior traffic management experience, ideally on civil construction or infrastructure projects
- A current Traffic Controller qualification is preferred
- A full Class 1 driver licence is preferred
- Strong focus on safe working practices and Zero Harm principles
- Reliable, positive, and willing to work well in a team
- Good communication skills and confidence engaging with the local community
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in changing conditions
