Tongan-English Translator (Contract, Remote)

Position Overview

We are seeking a bilingual expert fluent in Tongan and English to join our team on a contractual basis. This remote role offers flexible working hours ranging from 10 to 40 hours per week, with compensation between $45 and $95 per hour depending on expertise.

Key Responsibilities

• Convert Tongan audio and video recordings into precise written transcripts with accurate timestamps.
• Evaluate and interpret the emotional undertones and speaker intentions in diverse communication contexts.
• Proofread and enhance the clarity, grammar, and fluency of transcriptions in both Tongan and English languages.
• Clarify complex or idiomatic Tongan phrases, making them understandable for non-native speakers.
• Offer comprehensive feedback on language usage, tonal quality, and linguistic subtleties within the content.
• Work closely with project coordinators to ensure timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
• Assist in improving AI language models by providing expert linguistic input.

Qualifications and Skills

• Native or near-native proficiency in Tongan and English with excellent written and oral communication abilities.
• Proven professional experience in transcription and accurate timestamping of audio/video materials.
• Sharp sensitivity to emotional context, tone, and underlying speaker motivations in language.
• In-depth understanding of Tongan grammar, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances.
• Educational background or experience in linguistics, translation, localization, or related fields preferred.
• Capacity to produce detailed and well-organized linguistic analyses on sophisticated language tasks.
