Job description

About ASB and the Payments Tribe

ASB’s Payments Tribe is central to the way money moves across New Zealand, supporting everything from daily purchases to card and business payment flows that customers depend on. The bank is actively modernising its payments landscape, including work across the Cards domain, within a complex environment made up of multiple squads, high integration, and significant interdependencies.

This is an opportunity for an experienced testing leader to join the Payments Tribe and help deliver robust, high-quality payment experiences.

About the role

In this position, you will own end-to-end testing delivery across a large programme. While you will not have formal people management responsibilities, you will work closely with squads to keep testing on track and to drive quality outcomes.

You will partner with engineers, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to support the delivery of complex integrated solutions. The work requires a strong focus on security, performance, resilience, and overall fitness for purpose, especially in high-throughput payment systems where accuracy and stability matter.

The role sits in a fast-moving enterprise setting, where you will coordinate test activity across squads, influence quality practices in the Cards domain, and help ensure release readiness.

Key responsibilities

  • Take ownership of test delivery across several squads within a major programme.
  • Coordinate day-to-day test planning, execution, and alignment across teams.
  • Build programme-level test plans and strategies that keep delivery consistent across squads.
  • Work with Product Owners and business stakeholders to support end-to-end validation and release sign-off.
  • Align stakeholders on test scope, delivery risks, and readiness for release.
  • Develop and maintain agile test strategies and plans.
  • Support squads in using test automation and non-functional testing methods effectively.
  • Promote a culture of ongoing improvement within the testing community.
  • Review requirements and confirm appropriate coverage across system, integration, API, and end-to-end testing layers.
  • Assess test outcomes, defects, and risks, and communicate them clearly to stakeholders.
  • Help manage complex test environments and test data across integrated systems.
  • Help shape testing standards, practices, and quality outcomes across squads.

What you will need

  • Demonstrated experience leading testing on large or complex projects or programmes.
  • Strong capability across functional, system, integration, API, end-to-end, automation, and performance testing.
  • Experience coordinating testing across multiple squads.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including influencing senior stakeholders and building alignment in complex environments.
  • Ability to develop and manage test strategies and plans, including automation and non-functional testing approaches.
  • Experience managing, tracking, and escalating risks, issues, and test progress.
  • Strong skills in test estimation, prioritisation, and delivery planning.
  • Experience handling integrated test environments and test data.
  • Ability to coach and mentor testers on standards and best practices.
  • Practical understanding of modern automation and API testing tools and approaches such as .NET, REST APIs, Selenium, and BDD.
  • Working knowledge of Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience embedding continuous improvement into testing practices.
  • Background in high-throughput, always-on, or mission-critical systems.

Nice to have

  • Previous experience in payments, cards, or financial services.
  • Experience in integration-heavy or large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Exposure to test simulators such as FINSIM.
  • ISTQB certification.
  • Exposure to cloud technologies.
