Role overview
Aurizon is hiring a qualified Terminal Locomotive Driver for its Alice Springs, Northern Territory depot. The position focuses on supporting terminal leadership with yard shunting activity and related yard information. Flexible engagement options may be considered, including full-time, part-time, casual, or fixed-term arrangements. This is an on-site role only and is not a FIFO/DIDO position.
Permanent appointments may be eligible for a sign-on incentive and relocation assistance, with terms subject to discussion during recruitment.
Key duties
- Schedule and carry out yard shunting activities in an organised and safe way.
- Complete shunting work across yards and terminal areas efficiently and in line with safety requirements.
- Conduct train integrity checks and examinations.
- Perform minor upkeep and basic maintenance tasks for yard facilities.
- Prepare and share yard reports for the leadership team.
- Act as observer on nominated corridors when required.
- Inspect wagons as part of operational checks.
- Work closely with the team to maintain safe and effective yard operations.
- Move trains within the yard where qualified to do so.
- Build train consists by recording locomotive and wagon identification details and confirming consist accuracy electronically or manually.
Candidate profile
- Hold at least a Certificate III in Terminal Train Driving (freight).
- Be able to pass pre-employment screening, including driving history, reference checks, and a CAT 1 rail medical.
- Show a strong safety mindset and the ability to apply safety management principles in practice.
- Hold an unrestricted current Class C driver’s licence.
- Communicate clearly in writing and verbally, including with customers.
- Demonstrate sound judgement and problem-solving ability, especially when working under pressure.
- Stay composed in emergency situations.
- Work well as part of a team.
- Maintain strong concentration over extended periods.
