Job description
Role overview
Amazon Web Services is seeking a highly driven Technical Subsea Network Business Developer to help expand and scale one of the largest and most intricate networks in the world. In this role, you will support the planning and growth of subsea backbone capacity while working closely with cross-functional teams. The position calls for someone who is self-directed, quick to learn, and able to shape decisions across different organizations.
You will partner with multiple Amazon business units to collect, refine, and advance program objectives tied to submarine cable initiatives. The role also involves introducing better processes and ways of working that support continuous improvement, while collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders across Amazon.
This role combines business and technical expertise to support network acquisition and implementation strategy, along with managing strategic supplier relationships that help expand AWS globally. You will help identify practical, efficient, and sometimes unconventional solutions that support Amazon’s worldwide growth and expansion needs.
Key responsibilities
You will coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to develop submarine cable programs around the world. The work includes organizing, monitoring, and aligning vendors as well as internal teams to deliver new subsea backbone capacity for Amazon. You will also work with capacity planners and engineers to ensure the network topology is designed and delivered in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.
In addition, you will collaborate with teams across business development, finance, tax, legal, and deployment to successfully execute plans and bring projects to completion.
Day-to-day work
These are long-term projects that can span multiple years, so the role requires strong planning, disciplined execution, and a mindset focused on ongoing simplification and innovation. You will keep internal and external partners aligned, push projects toward milestones and deadlines, and maintain high standards for delivery and technical quality.
If issues or delays arise, you will help find solutions quickly, keep customers informed, and communicate clear next steps. The team also values learning from one another to maintain consistency across global workstreams.
About the team
The Subsea Backbone team manages every part of submarine network deployment, operations, upgrades, and administration within AWS. The group owns the technology roadmap and standards for submarine cable systems, optical fiber, installation methods, optical equipment procurement, RSPC, related operating models, and security requirements.
The team also defines the contractual structure for all components needed to add capacity to the AWS Backbone Network. It works closely with Regional Business Development teams to deliver submarine capacity to a global standard that supports scalable and economical service for customers.
Qualifications
Required background: a bachelor’s degree, at least 5 years of experience developing, negotiating, and executing business agreements, experience creating strategies that influence leadership-level decisions, experience managing cross-functional programs and coordinating release schedules, and 10+ years of subsea industry experience with deep knowledge of fiber optic networks and submarine cables.
Preferred background: experience with Agile project management, automation tools, version control tools, strong analytical ability, close attention to detail, effective communication, network troubleshooting experience, and customer-facing experience with a focus on excellent service.
Additional information
Amazon supports an inclusive workplace and provides accommodations or adjustments during the application and hiring process, including support for interviews and onboarding, for candidates who need them.
