Role Overview
The Sweet Flavourist is integral to driving flavor sales and innovation through developing and producing flavors, maintaining flavor and raw material libraries, and supporting customer briefs. This role may involve guiding junior or trainee flavourists in contributing to various projects. The individual collaborates with customers, flavorists, sensory experts, production teams, and suppliers to ensure timely and effective fulfillment of objectives. A comprehensive understanding of raw materials, production, regulatory standards, and sensory analysis is essential, accompanied by continuing education via organoleptic assessments, experimentation, literature study, and interflavourist cooperation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead flavor development projects in alignment with business goals and customer needs independently.
- Explore and incorporate new ingredients proactively.
- Leverage Kerry’s proprietary technologies to craft distinctive flavor solutions.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EUM).
- Conduct technical presentations and lead collaborative sessions with clients.
- Help train and mentor trainee flavourists.
- Create and spray dry flavors to meet project specifications.
- Perform comprehensive physical, chemical, and sensory testing and analysis of flavors.
- Partner with analytical teams for flavor matching exercises.
- Ensure adherence to regulatory and labeling standards for flavors.
- Work cross-functionally to capitalize on Kerry’s strengths and maximize taste and nutrition value for customers.
- Participate in sensory panel evaluations.
- Manage raw materials and finished products through Kerry systems to keep data current.
- Attend industry-specific events and seminars to enhance flavor expertise.
Qualifications and Skills
- A Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or relevant industry experience.
- Significant hands-on experience in sweet flavor development.
- Strong foundation in organic and food chemistry and flavor application techniques.
- Experience with powders, emulsions, and liquid blending preferred.
- Competence in mathematical problem-solving.
- Excellent troubleshooting capabilities.
- Highly developed olfactory and gustatory senses.
- Passion for creating innovative flavors.
- Ability to engage effectively with cross-functional teams at all organizational levels.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Broad flavor experience across various end-uses is advantageous.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances are desirable.
- Willingness to taste a wide range of materials without limitation is preferred.
