About the Role and Organization

The City of Guelph is seeking a dedicated professional to fill the permanent full-time position of Supervisor, Sports and Leisure Grounds within the Parks Department. This role is based at Parks, 50 Municipal Street, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and involves in-person work. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee maintenance and establishment of turf in parks, boulevards, roadsides, stormwater facilities, sports fields, and courts
  • Manage sports field and court infrastructure including setup, painting, lighting, resurfacing, nets, lines, benches, backstops, central irrigation control, integrated pest management, and turf cultural activities such as fertilization and aeration
  • Supervise maintenance and operation of the City’s trail system
  • Coordinate and supervise preparations and operations for tournaments and sports events
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, departmental policies, best practices, and relevant codes; develop and implement standard operating procedures and guidelines as needed
  • Recruit, train, motivate, manage, and evaluate full-time, contract, and seasonal staff, conducting performance reviews and addressing disciplinary actions when necessary
  • Create and manage work plans and schedules prioritizing operational needs
  • Track, analyze, and report operational performance, recommending improvements to enhance safety, service quality, and efficiency
  • Respond to inquiries, investigate service requests and complaints from the public, emergency services, management, and council
  • Develop and implement maintenance and renewal strategies for assets, including condition assessments for future repairs and replacements
  • Manage procurement of materials, services, and equipment supporting both operational and capital projects, including contract audits and price negotiations
  • Execute capital and operational budget projects on schedule consistent with master plans, relevant legislation, and building codes
  • Assist in developing sports field, turf, and trail operating and capital budgets
  • Pursue grant opportunities including application, delivery, and reporting
  • Ensure availability of materials and equipment to meet work plans
  • Provide documentation to support risk management, insurance, and legal proceedings related to damage or liability claims
  • Engage actively in professional and community committees, liaising with user groups and event organizers
  • Stay current with advances in parks management, sports field construction, integrated pest management, turf care, winter control, and related equipment
  • Participate in on-call rotations, including after-hours supervision of winter maintenance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Landscape Design/Construction, Horticulture, Parks Management, Turfgrass Management, or closely related fields; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experienced leadership skills managing staff or work teams, preferably in municipal unionized settings
  • Proven ability to procure and manage contracted services ensuring compliance with specifications and policies
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7, Pesticides Act, and related legislation
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage with staff, stakeholders, and public
  • Strong customer service aptitude for resolving inquiries and complaints
  • Ability to manage pressure in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Required to obtain and maintain Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s license with an acceptable driving record confirmed by submission of a driver’s abstract prior to employment
  • Flexible schedule with willingness to attend meetings, events beyond regular hours, and rotating shifts including evenings and weekends
  • Assets include Ministry of Environment Pesticide License(s), Integrated Pest Management Accreditation, CSA Z462 electrical safety training, Joint Health & Safety Certification, and experience with mobile data devices and software such as PerfectMind, EProval, GIS, JD Edwards, or WAM

Work Schedule

The role demands a 35-hour week from Monday to Friday, typically between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm, with the possibility of evening or weekend work, and participation in an on-call rotation.
