Job description

About the Senate of Canada

The Senate of Canada plays an important role in Canada’s parliamentary democracy. Senators review bills, scrutinize public policy, champion issues, and take part in interparliamentary diplomacy.

The organization is made up of engaged professionals who reflect the country’s range of backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints. It is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where employees have fair access to employment, development, and advancement opportunities.

Role summary

The French parliamentary stenographer produces a live written record of Senate proceedings using a steno machine and computer-assisted transcription (CAT) technology. This record is later incorporated into the Senate Debates, Senate committee proceedings, and Senate-hosted conferences.

In addition to real-time transcription, the role includes reviewing transcripts, providing Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), delivering live captioning for Senate proceedings, maintaining a personal CAT glossary/database, and reviewing the Senate Debates to prepare the bound version. The initial transcript review step is completed with Eclipse software and an internal production tool called Iris.

Position details

This selection process is open to the general public to fill one full-time temporary position with a minimum duration of 12 months in the Communications, Broadcasting and Publications Directorate.

A pool of qualified candidates may also be established to meet future staffing needs. Preference will be given to successful candidates based in Ottawa or those willing to relocate there, although remote work arrangements may be considered because of the unique nature of the position.

The job is classified at SEN 8, with an annual salary range of $86,650 to $109,635.

Please note that the successful candidate may also be considered for other temporary or indeterminate positions at the same level with similar requirements.

Application instructions

Applicants must submit a resume and a one-page cover letter explaining their interest in the position.

Candidates may apply in either official language, and accommodation requests can be made at any stage of the assessment process. Any information provided for accommodation purposes will remain confidential. The Senate also encourages employment equity candidates to identify themselves if they belong to a designated group.

Requirements

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada and must consent to providing personal information as part of the security clearance process required for appointment.

Working conditions

Employees may need to work overtime and follow an irregular schedule, including evenings when the Senate or its committees are sitting, or whenever required. Candidates are advised to save a copy of the posting before the deadline, as it will no longer be available afterward.

Additional compensation

Along with the annual salary, the role may include extra pay in the form of a real-time bonus.

Language requirements

French is essential for written comprehension, written expression, and oral interaction.

Organizational needs

The Senate of Canada is committed to building and sustaining an inclusive workplace where all employees have equitable access to employment, professional growth, and advancement.
