Where you'll work
Job description
Role Overview
The Atlantic is hiring an experienced staff writer to join its newsroom and report on the media ecosystem. This position calls for someone who is deeply curious about how journalism is changing today, including the impact of technology, consolidation, closures, and the evolving responsibilities of news organizations. The role also involves covering newspapers, Substack creators, television networks, business leaders, influencers, and other key figures shaping the information landscape.
What You’ll Do
You’ll be expected to build strong relationships with senior sources at both emerging and established outlets and produce stories that are timely, widely relevant, and capable of driving conversation beyond the media industry. The job requires someone who can identify strong story ideas, report them thoroughly, write with skill, and bring together reporting and analysis. When news breaks, you should be able to move quickly; when the moment demands it, you should also be comfortable digging deeply into the details.
Candidate Profile
The ideal hire brings substantial newsroom experience, a strong instinct for compelling stories, and a genuine appreciation for The Atlantic’s journalism and mission. Success in this position will depend on the ability to pursue scoops, write clearly and elegantly, and cover the beat with both urgency and depth.
Additional Requirements
- A minimum of 7 years of professional journalism experience is required.
- A strong understanding of, and enthusiasm for, The Atlantic’s mission and editorial work is expected.
Compensation and Location
The salary range for this role is $120,000 to $180,000 annually. The position is based in New York or Washington, D.C.
Employment Details
This is a Guild position and is based on-site. The Atlantic is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants from traditionally underrepresented communities, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, and people with disabilities.
Hiring Conditions
Any offer of employment is contingent on satisfactory reference checks and compliance with The Atlantic’s COVID-19 vaccination policy. Employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19, including booster doses, and provide proof of vaccination status. If vaccination is not possible because of a disability or medical contraindication, or due to a sincerely held religious belief, an accommodation request may be made.
