Role Overview

We are hiring a staff photographer who will spearhead the creation of product visuals and prominent hero images for the Wirecutter Store, while also supporting major editorial projects when possible. This role is pivotal in crafting a visual identity that conveys trust, humanity, and service excellence inline with our journalistic standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create hero and collection images for the Store homepage and main landing areas.
  • Produce detailed product shots for product detail pages capturing various angles, intricate details, and real-world usage aligned with testing insights.
  • Develop and maintain a consistent visual style for Store photography, including standards for lighting, angle, background, and cropping ensuring a uniform look across our product catalog.
  • Collaborate closely with editors, designers, and cross-functional teams to integrate photos in ways that promote clarity, accessibility, and consumer trust.
  • Support editorial initiatives by planning and executing photography for big editorial packages and seasonal campaigns.
  • Manage photography sessions for newsletter, social media, and other marketing outlets in conjunction with marketing and audience teams.
  • Maintain and operate the Long Island City studio including equipment upkeep, set management, and prop organization.
  • Handle post-production editing including color correction and retouching consistent with Wirecutter’s style.
  • Organize and tag image assets to ensure easy accessibility and reuse by Store and editorial teams.
  • Uphold the values of journalistic independence and contribute to the company’s mission of truthful reporting.

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of professional photography experience, preferably in editorial, ecommerce, or product photography.
  • Robust portfolio demonstrating expertise in composition, lighting, prop styling, and storytelling, especially for product or lifestyle photos.
  • Experience working with studio and natural lighting conditions with proficiency in professional camera systems and lighting setups.
  • Advanced skills with post-production software including Capture One, Adobe Lightroom, and Photoshop on Mac platforms.
  • Preferred: Ability to develop and adhere to visual style guides, strong communication and collaboration skills, excellent organization to juggle multiple priorities, and a passion for Wirecutter’s mission and standards.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is set at 75316 USD. Eligible candidates may also receive variable compensation including bonuses and equity awards.
