Staff Front End Engineer - Portable Platform

Job Overview

Join a dynamic team driving innovation in design experience globally. This position is based in Perth, Western Australia and involves working onsite full-time, focusing on advancing a platform that unifies React applications across web and mobile environments.

Role Responsibilities

• Architect and develop the frontend framework of the Portable Platform enabling React developers to create code once and deploy it seamlessly on web and React Native environments.
• Lead the migration of codebase from exclusively React Web to accommodate both React Web and React Native efficiently, influencing the future frontend structure.
• Build and maintain web implementations of shared components across platforms, ensuring consistent operation on iOS, Android, and browsers.
• Facilitate knowledge transfer and help frontend engineers upskill to adapt to the multi-runtime model through documentation, design reviews, and collaboration.
• Incorporate server-side rendering techniques and React Server Components to connect backend systems effectively to the frontend platform.
• Maintain active coding involvement including authoring design documentation, contributing to production codebases, and conducting reviews.

Required Expertise

• Deep understanding of React internals including reconciliation, rendering lifecycle, and server components.
• Proven track record in enhancing frontend performance on complex projects with measurable improvements.
• Experience developing multi-runtime or cross-platform applications and managing component layer abstractions.
• Familiarity with the distinctions between React Native and React Web mental models and runtime behaviors.
• Demonstrated ability to influence multiple engineering teams through prototypes, documentation, and direct coordination.
• Active daily coding practice with recent contributions to code, architectural decisions, and reviews.
• Practical experience using AI tools in frontend development workflows and an understanding of their impact.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of server-side rendering and React Server Components integration.
• Hands-on experience shipping React Native projects.
• Contributions to open-source projects in React or related ecosystems.
• Depth in building reusable component libraries or design systems spanning multiple rendering platforms.

Team and Organizational Context

This role is part of the Client Platform group which supports the foundational layers used by all frontend teams, handling technologies for web, native mobile, desktop, and design systems. The role specifically focuses on the Mobile Platform subgroup’s initiative to transform Canva’s mobile presence into a truly native, cross-platform experience.
