Role overview
QatarEnergy is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to support the evolution of its trading systems landscape. The role focuses on shaping the transformation roadmap, converting business needs into practical solution designs, and helping deliver efficient application capabilities for the trading function.
What the role involves
- Contribute to the strategic direction of QatarEnergy Trading’s transformation so it stays aligned with long-term business objectives and target architecture.
- Work closely with stakeholders to refine requirements and turn them into workable solution designs and implementations.
- Own and manage product backlogs while coordinating implementation work with technical teams.
- Collaborate across IT and commercial teams to bring together different viewpoints and drive progress.
- Partner directly with business users using a customer-focused style and communicate effectively with people at different levels and functions.
- Help assess the effect of business changes and support teams through onboarding and implementation.
- Provide specialist support and technical services for related applications in coordination with other ICT teams.
Experience and technical background
- A minimum of 9 years’ experience in commodities trading, gained with leading IOCs, trading houses, NOCs, or vendors working in change, process, or technology.
- Hands-on experience with C/ETRM solutions and their use in improving trading strategy, risk control, and operational performance.
- Strong knowledge of commodity markets, with LNG being preferred, along with trading models, operating structures, risk principles, and related technology platforms such as C/ETRM, fleet management, trading platforms, and market analytics tools.
- Broad end-to-end understanding across commodities trading, shipping, and finance, including advanced knowledge of the front-to-back office trade lifecycle.
- Depth in at least one specialist area such as physical LNG trading, cargo operations, shipping, derivatives and emissions trading, trading risk and finance, or portfolio optimization.
- Strong analytical and conceptual problem-solving ability, including comfort dealing with ambiguity, taking ownership, and making decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business needs into technical specifications.
- Proven background in managing backlogs and related documentation alongside development teams.
- Genuine interest in using technology to enable better commodities trading outcomes.
- Working knowledge of IT standards, architecture, integration approaches, and best practices.
- Excellent presentation, communication, and influencing skills, with the ability to explain ideas clearly to management, stakeholders, and vendors.
- High proficiency with common workplace and delivery tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, MS Project, Azure DevOps, Confluence, Jira, Miro, Mural, SQL queries, and advanced Excel usage.
- Experience with C/ETRM platforms such as Openlink, TriplePoint, or Allegro is preferred, while knowledge of Planlogic EOS, Veson Nautical IMOS, and SAP is an advantage.
- Practical exposure to agile methods is useful, and PMP or Prince2 certification is an added advantage.
- Postgraduate study such as an MSc, PhD, or MBA is considered beneficial.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in technology or finance from an internationally recognized university is required.
