Job description
Role Overview
The Hydrographic Production Database (HPD) and Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) Specialist will oversee the creation, upkeep, and management of HPD and ENC data. This position supports safe marine navigation and ensures compliance with marine data standards and governance by managing hydrographic survey information and related charting products.
Key Responsibilities
- Process, validate, and integrate hydrographic survey data into HPD and ENC systems adhering strictly to IHO standards and corporate procedures.
- Maintain accurate and consistent marine geospatial databases to ensure navigational data reliability and availability.
- Conduct quality checks, compile updates, and submit ENC revisions to relevant stakeholders and authorities.
- Collaborate closely with hydrographic survey teams and marine operations to incorporate survey outcomes promptly into the datasets.
- Manage charting workflows, including version control and data distribution to both internal teams and external users.
- Ensure all activities comply with IHO, IMO, and regional hydrographic regulations.
- Use approved charting and GIS software to compile, edit, and maintain ENC cells.
- Carry out data validation, quality assurance, and implement error resolutions per ENC and HPD production standards.
Educational and Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Nautical Cartography, Hydrographic Surveying, GIS, Geography, Marine Surveying, or a closely related discipline.
- At least 3 years of practical experience in Marine GIS, ENC/HPD production, and processing of hydrographic data.
Language and Interpersonal Skills
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English to effectively report and maintain positive relations with superiors and stakeholders, including negotiating and resolving conflicts.
- Strong team player with the ability to support colleagues and respond to team needs as necessary.
- Confident computer user, familiar with relevant applications and communication technology.
- Maintains confidentiality and professional conduct, even in challenging or confrontational situations.
- Capable of working independently to meet objectives efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision.
- Monitors performance and functionality of communication, computing, and navigational equipment.
- Solid understanding of maritime terminology and the marine environment.
Technical Experience
- Thorough knowledge of ENC production standards including IHO S-57 and S-101, HPD concepts, and ENC editing and validation processes.
- Hands-on experience working with CARIS BathyDataBase and SevenCs ENC Composer tools.
- Good grasp of hydrographic survey data formats, S-57/S-101 toolkits, and integration workflows related to S-100 compliance.
- Competence in GIS analysis, spatial database management, and data validation techniques.
- Exceptional attention to detail and analytical capabilities with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary technical and marine teams.
