About the Award
The Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) invites applications annually from Newer Researchers for funding a small scale research project focused on higher education. All applicants are reviewed by an expert panel, regardless of their current membership status with SRHE. This 2026 Award, sponsored jointly by SRHE and Routledge Taylor & Francis Group, offers up to three awards, each worth £3,000, to support a one year research project aimed at early career researchers.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold at least a first undergraduate degree and either be registered as a student or engaged in research through a university or college with a dedication to a career in higher education research. These awards cannot fund postgraduate study or research related to a PhD submission. Candidates need to be within six years of completing their PhD or equivalent qualification, excluding any formal career breaks for family care. Applications must concern projects distinct from their PhD work. Joint or multiple applications by the same individual are prohibited.

- Clear and appropriate research methodology
- Detailed and reasonable budgeting and timeline
- Potential broader relevance and applicability of the research
- Alignment with the applicant’s career pathway
- Connection to SRHE’s research interests
Note: Budget proposals should only cover direct research costs and exclude full economic costing, overhead, or estate charges.
Responsibilities for Awardees
- Provide detailed accounting of all project expenditures with receipts; payments disbursed quarterly upon account submission
- Submit quarterly progress reports
- UK residents must attend Research & Development committee meetings; associated travel costs are funded separately
- Present research abstracts at the SRHE Annual Research Conference
- Deliver a fully referenced research paper for publication and possible presentations to relevant groups
- Contribute an article for the SRHE newsletter and participate in an SRHE Network event
- Publish a journal article or book chapter within 12 months post-project completion
