Role overview
Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children is hiring two social workers for its Sydenham office in Christchurch: one permanent full-time position and one full-time fixed-term position running until January 2027. The starting salary range is NZ$81,206 to NZ$97,557, depending on experience.
This is a purpose-led role focused on supporting tamariki and rangatahi, and working alongside whānau through times of challenge, change, and development. The work calls for a calm, respectful, and optimistic approach while protecting mana in every interaction.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out detailed safety and risk assessments.
- Facilitate hui with professionalism, sensitivity, and confidence.
- Create personalised plans that are strengths-based and aligned with cultural needs.
- Support and enhance the mana of whānau through day-to-day practice.
- Collaborate closely with iwi, hapū, Māori organisations, community groups, and other government agencies to build enduring and meaningful connections.

What we are looking for
The ideal candidate may be experienced in statutory social work or newly registered, provided they bring the right values, commitment, and capability.
- Current SWRB registration, or eligibility to become registered.
- A recognised qualification in social work.
- A genuine practice style grounded in strengths-based principles.
- A full New Zealand driver licence with a clean record; prior convictions may be assessed individually.
- Strong commitment to working in partnership with whānau.
- Advantageous: experience in statutory social work, strong communication and resilience, cultural competence, knowledge of tikanga Māori and Pasifika cultures, and good documentation plus digital skills.
