Job description

Role overview

This is a permanent, full-time social work opportunity based at the Rangiora office in Canterbury. The position sits within a lively, multicultural team and offers a starting salary in the range of $81,206 to $97,557, with the final amount determined by experience.

The work is centred on supporting tamariki and rangatahi, and partnering with whānau through periods of uncertainty, change, and growth. The role calls for someone who can bring compassion, confidence, and a steady sense of purpose while upholding mana in every interaction.

What you will do

  • Carry out detailed assessments of safety and risk.
  • Facilitate hui with professionalism and care.
  • Create practical, strengths-focused plans that reflect cultural context.
  • Support the dignity and mana of whānau in every engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with iwi, hapū, Māori organisations, community partners, and other government agencies to build lasting outcomes.

What the organisation offers

You will join a values-led organisation that emphasises purpose, growth, and wellbeing. The environment includes support for flexible working, comprehensive benefits, ongoing kaupapa Māori learning, and professional development. The workplace also values and actively supports diversity, inclusion, and te ao Māori.

What you will need

This role suits someone who can lead with both skill and empathy, whether you are highly experienced or newly registered.

You should bring full SWRB registration, or be eligible to register, along with a recognised social work qualification. A strengths-based approach is essential, as is a full, clean New Zealand driver's licence. Historic convictions may be considered individually.

Commitment to working alongside whānau in partnership is fundamental. Experience in statutory social work is an advantage but not essential. Strong communication skills, resilience, cultural competence, knowledge of tikanga Māori and Pasifika cultures, and good documentation and digital literacy are all valuable.

About the employer

Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children is guided by the belief that every tamaiti deserves a safe, loving, and supported life. Its values include aroha, whakapapa, mana, tika and pono, and oranga. The organisation is focused on genuine partnership with iwi, hapū, and Māori communities, with tamariki and whānau kept at the centre of its work.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online with a CV and covering letter. Current employees should apply using their Oranga Tamariki email login. The closing date is Thursday 9 July 2026, although applications may be reviewed and shortlisted as they arrive. The organisation may close the vacancy earlier once all roles are filled.

Code of conduct

Applicants should be familiar with the organisation’s code of conduct, which outlines expectations for staff and requires employees to come to work free from the influence of drugs and alcohol.
