Job description
About the Company
BuzzFeed, Inc. is an internet-born media company focused on bringing joy, truth, and brand-safe entertainment to audiences across entertainment, news, food, pop culture, and commerce. Since 2006, the company has worked to make online content more inclusive, empathetic, and creative while helping people discover what to watch, read, and buy.
Role Overview
BuzzFeed is hiring a Social Video Fellow to concept, create, and publish short-form video content for TikTok and Instagram. This is an entry-level role for early-career creators who are deeply familiar with internet culture, social trends, and fast-moving digital storytelling.
The fellowship is designed as a hands-on learning experience for creators who want to build a career in digital media. You will collaborate closely with social and editorial teammates, gain practical experience, and work in a fast-paced environment where creativity and speed both matter.
This position is based in New York, NY with a hybrid schedule that requires in-office attendance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is a full-time paid role at $20 per hour. The fellowship is described as three months in the compensation details, while the broader fellowship program is also described as a year-long learning program.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, produce, and publish engaging short-form video content for BuzzFeed’s TikTok and Instagram channels.
- Track memes, sounds, formats, and platform trends, then turn them into fresh and culturally relevant content ideas.
- Film, edit, and rapidly refine videos using mobile-friendly tools and in-app editing features.
- Appear on camera when needed and also capture footage of others.
- Write sharp captions and copy that fit BuzzFeed’s voice and platform style.
- Interact with audiences by replying to comments, gathering audience signals, and joining community conversations.
- Review content performance, learn from results, and keep improving creative output through experimentation.
Candidate Profile
You should be a creative self-starter who enjoys working in a high-energy, internet-first setting. Some prior exposure to short-form video production through internships, freelance work, school projects, or personal channels is expected. You should be comfortable moving quickly, filming and editing on the fly, and adapting content for social platforms.
Strong interest in social media trends, memes, cultural conversations, and shareable content is important. Familiarity with apps such as CapCut, InShot, TikTok’s native editor, Instagram editing tools, and Canva is expected; experience with Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or similar advanced tools is a bonus. Good communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and enthusiasm for trying new formats are also important.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit all materials at the time of application. Instead of a formal cover letter, candidates should write a few short paragraphs explaining what topics they would cover for BuzzFeed as a Social Video Fellow and what draws them to BuzzFeed’s content, including any ideas for improvement.
Applicants must also create 1–2 TikToks or Instagram Reels based on a BuzzFeed quiz, submit one additional video that demonstrates editing ability, and ensure at least one submitted video features them on camera. Links to the videos should be included at the end of the cover letter. Public social media profile links and a one-page resume are also required.
Use of artificial intelligence or a large language model such as ChatGPT during the interview process may result in rejection of the application.
Workplace and Compensation Notes
This is a non-union role with hourly compensation set at $20.00 per hour. Final pay may be adjusted based on the selected candidate’s experience, skills, certifications, and location. BuzzFeed states that it is committed to fair and equitable pay practices.
The company describes a supportive, inclusive workplace with opportunities for personal and professional development through work experience, an in-house Learning Team, employee resource groups, and related offerings. BuzzFeed is also committed to equal opportunity and does not discriminate on the basis of protected characteristics.
Important Dates
The intended start date for the fellowship is August 3, 2026. Applications are scheduled to close on Thursday, July 9 at 5:00 PM EST.
