Job description
About the organization
More Perfect Union is an advocacy, journalism, and education group focused on strengthening the power of working people. Since its launch in February 2021, the organization has built a large audience and earned recognition for its reporting and commentary. The brand has quickly become a fast-growing left-of-center YouTube presence.
Role overview
The Social Media Producer will help grow the social media presence for More Perfect University, the organization’s campus-focused program, and will help spark discussion among college-aged audiences on economic justice, corporate influence, free speech, tenant organizing, labor organizing, and related topics. This role involves finding, shaping, and distributing content across Instagram, TikTok, X, Bluesky, and similar platforms, while keeping the feeds active with timely, informative, and engaging posts every day. The position also supports the release of short-form video content. The ideal candidate is highly creative, enthusiastic about reporting on issues affecting young people, and strong in writing, editing, and audience engagement strategy.
Key responsibilities
- Work with the Campus Program Manager and Campus Creator Lead to plan and carry out social strategies that grow and engage the More Perfect University audience.
- Track a wide mix of sources, including media outlets, podcasts, YouTubers, news wires, trade publications, cable programs, and legislative hearings, to identify timely, notable, or overlooked stories worth amplifying.
- Search social platforms for relevant user-generated content and first-person material tied to the mission and to student audiences, including protest footage and labor-action coverage.
- Produce high-performing news-driven posts for Instagram, Bluesky, TikTok, and X on a daily basis, including graphics, rapid-response clips, and similar formats.
- Help distribute short-form videos by scheduling content across channels and drafting copy for Instagram, Twitter/X, and Bluesky.
- Make sound editorial judgments about daily news priorities and frame stories in ways that are both accurate and compelling.
- Keep the social voice informative and engaging, maintain high editorial standards, and ensure content stays tightly aligned with the audience and current news cycle.
- Review analytics, audience feedback, and platform trends, then turn those insights into practical improvements.
- Handle several projects at once and deliver work on deadline.
- Take on other duties as needed.
Requirements
- 3 to 5 years of experience in social media strategy and storytelling, ideally within a newsroom environment.
- Strong command of how major platforms work, including their best practices, algorithms, and performance metrics on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter/X, and Bluesky.
- Proven success in growing followers and engagement significantly on social channels.
- Basic graphic design ability.
- Working familiarity with graphic design and video-editing tools such as Canva, Adobe Suite, Descript, CapCut, and native TikTok/Instagram editing tools.
- Good awareness of Gen Z culture, interests, motivations, and pain points.
- Experience with social media management and analytics tools such as Sprout Social and RivalIQ.
- Strong writing and professional communication skills.
- Excellent organization and the ability to juggle many priorities simultaneously.
- Comfort working independently in a remote, work-from-home setting.
