Job description

Role Overview

The Social Media Coordinator will shape and oversee digital content that advances the College of Arts and Sciences’ marketing and communications priorities. The role focuses on building engaging, audience-centered messaging that highlights academic offerings, research activity, and the broader value of an arts and sciences education. It also helps deepen relationships with students and alumni through consistent, well-planned digital storytelling.

About the University

The University of South Carolina system serves communities across the state through eight institutions and 20 locations. More than 50,000 students study across the system, including the Columbia research campus and four-year universities in Aiken, Upstate, and Beaufort. Palmetto College campuses in Salkehatchie, Union, Lancaster, and Sumter also provide pathways to associate and bachelor’s degrees through in-person, online, and blended learning. The system emphasizes service and community impact throughout South Carolina and beyond.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop digital content strategies that align with college communications goals.
  • Create social media and web content designed to inform, engage, and grow target audiences.
  • Plan, produce, schedule, and publish content across social and digital platforms.
  • Coordinate messaging so that it stays consistent with the college brand and communication standards.
  • Work with teams across the college to support campaigns, stories, and outreach efforts.
  • Capture strong photos and videos using cameras or mobile devices to support storytelling and engagement.

Skills and Abilities

The position calls for a solid understanding of leading social media platforms and the most effective ways to distribute content in a higher-education setting. The coordinator should be comfortable using computer tools for writing, editing photos and videos, creating designs, and managing online scheduling systems. Strong writing, editing, and audience-aware communication are essential, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should bring practical experience with social media strategy, digital content production, and editorial work in a higher-education environment. The preferred background includes a bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, or a related discipline plus three years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree plus one year of relevant experience.

Application Notes

This is a full-time position. Applications are accepted through July 23, 2026. The role may be removed after a minimum posting period of five business days, at the department’s discretion. Review and hiring timelines can differ based on the needs of the search. Candidates whose qualifications are selected for further consideration will be contacted by phone or email.
