Job description

Role Overview

The Social Media Assistant will be a highly organized, analytical, and creative team member responsible for shaping and producing organic social media content for the Metropolitan Opera. Reporting to the Director of Digital Marketing, this person will help run the organization’s social channels and provide broader support to the Marketing team by working with colleagues across Editorial, Graphics, Video, and other departments to meet sales, communication, and business goals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Met’s social media presence under the guidance of the Director of Digital Marketing, aligning daily posting and scheduling with the broader marketing plan and sales priorities, and drafting posts when required.
  • Keep the social content calendar current, making room for material that supports sales objectives while also increasing engagement and audience growth, and act as the point person for other teams requesting placement in the schedule.
  • Handle community interaction and monitoring by replying to comments when appropriate, amplifying fan and artist posts, routing feedback to the right internal teams, and flagging content that violates community rules.
  • Partner with the Director of Digital Marketing, Content Producer, and colleagues in Marketing and Editorial to organize social opportunities such as opening nights, behind-the-scenes coverage, and offsite outreach events, while editing and publishing content in real time when needed.
  • Work with the Director of Digital Marketing to spot timely, relevant moments where the Met can join social conversations through reactive content.
  • Help prepare reporting by delivering weekly updates to internal stakeholders and building ad hoc reports for senior leadership when requested.
  • Support partnership-related promotional initiatives.
  • Assist with the administration of paid social campaigns as needed.
  • Maintain playlists for Front of House digital screens, including building and scheduling the associated content.
  • Supply Live in HD partners with approved materials for social media and email promotion.
  • At the direction of the Live in HD Marketing and Distribution Associate, coordinate the delivery of Live in HD trailers and video assets for use on social media, the web, and in cinema.
  • Provide general support to marketing and media colleagues as needed.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience in social media marketing or content development, ideally in a large organization.
  • Strong interest in social media and working knowledge of major platforms and social media management tools.
  • Proven project management, organization, and time-management abilities.
  • Creative thinking with the flexibility to work within organizational guidelines.
  • Excellent writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities and clear communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to set priorities in a demanding environment.
  • Experience with social scheduling and analytics tools such as Sprout Social.
  • Comfort using Microsoft Office.
  • Basic familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is considered helpful.
  • Knowledge of opera or a genuine passion for the arts is required.

Physical and Work Conditions

  • The role regularly involves sitting, speaking, and hearing.
  • It frequently includes repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, reaching, and bending.
  • There may occasionally be a need to lift items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • The job requires the ability to juggle multiple priorities and stay flexible in a fast-moving, deadline-driven setting.
  • Success in this role depends on working effectively both as part of a large cross-functional team and independently.
  • Evening and weekend availability is required when requested, including for special events and social media or photography opportunities.

Compensation

The annual salary for this role is $55,000.
