Role overview

This position involves day-to-day support work with children and young people in a centre setting in Sligo, County Sligo, Ireland. The role focuses on safeguarding, care planning, practical household support, documentation, and teamwork in line with child care procedures and policies.

Children and young people support

  • Contribute to creating and carrying out care and placement plans, and make sure the associated records are completed accurately.
  • Safeguard and encourage the rights and responsibilities of every child or young person in the centre.
  • Support each young person’s physical, emotional, social, and religious wellbeing.
  • Motivate attendance at school, training centres, and medical or clinical appointments.
  • Handle personal documents, arrangements, information, and finances on behalf of the young person where required.
  • Coordinate with parents, families, general services, and other agencies for the benefit of the young person.
  • Take part in meetings connected to the care and development of the young person.
  • Participate in age-appropriate play and activities with each child or young person in the centre.
  • Carry out physical intervention and/or restraint when necessary, following local policies and procedures.

Household duties

  • Work with young people to plan and prepare nutritious, high-quality meals.
  • Support home management tasks, including budgeting, general upkeep, and cleaning.

Administration and accountability

  • Attend team meetings and update the Social Care Leader or Manager on matters affecting service delivery.
  • Be responsible for money spent on behalf of the Child and Family Agency while on duty.
  • Provide regular written and verbal updates to the Social Care Leader or Manager on the young person’s progress and development.
  • Record and report any incidents, even minor ones, involving or caused by the young person.
  • Supervise students when required, under the direction of the Social Care Manager.
  • Know emergency procedures and understand who to contact in an emergency.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Stay informed about current legislation and professional child care practice.
  • Follow the Child and Family Agency’s procedures and policies.
  • Undertake ongoing professional learning and development.
  • Attend regular supervision sessions with the Social Care Leader or Manager.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned from time to time.
