Job description

Role overview

As part of the Recycling and Waste Team, you will support the day-to-day running of the Yate household waste recycling centre. The role focuses on safe and efficient waste handling, helping visitors place their materials in the right location, and keeping traffic moving smoothly through the site.

Key duties

  • Help keep the site orderly and prevent waste from spilling beyond designated areas.
  • Work to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of colleagues, site users and the wider public while following the site permit, relevant laws, and council procedures.
  • Maintain clear, accurate records for materials removed from the site.
  • Support the Supervisor and Team Leader by managing container changes and making sure the site has enough space to separate and store materials correctly.

Required experience and knowledge

  • Prior experience dealing with customers in a waste-related environment is essential.
  • You should understand waste management and recycling processes, including how to recognise hazardous or unacceptable waste.
  • A practical grasp of site rules, basic health and safety, and correct PPE use is needed.
  • The role requires safe manual handling, including lifting and moving heavy or awkward items with equipment such as pallet trucks.
  • You must be able to work effectively in a team, stay calm in difficult situations, handle disagreements professionally, and guide visitors on site rules while encouraging recycling.

Working pattern and conditions

This position involves rota-based shifts, including weekends and bank holidays. You will work outdoors in all weather conditions on uneven ground while wearing personal protective equipment.

Benefits and culture

The council highlights strong team spirit, support and training, along with generous annual leave, wellbeing support, and access to staff discounts such as eye tests, travel, shopping and leisure activities. The organisation also emphasises its commitment to diverse teams and community impact.
