SHW Business Partner - Infrastructure Lower North Island

About the Role

We seek a seasoned Safety, Health, and Wellbeing (SHW) Business Partner to collaborate with Infrastructure leaders in New Zealand's Lower North Island. This role is critical for ensuring safety principles are deeply integrated into diverse, technically demanding rail infrastructure operations. Reporting directly to the SHW General Manager for Infrastructure, you will offer practical advice, coaching, and assurance to enhance safety leadership, manage high-risk environments, and boost operational outcomes. Your contributions will directly support the safe execution of vital infrastructure projects nationwide.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Infrastructure leaders to implement effective safety, health, and wellbeing standards across sites in the Lower North Island.
• Lead risk identification, safety planning, and assurance of controls in multiple locations including depots and project areas.
• Coach and mentor leadership teams to elevate their competency and foster robust safety culture.
• Enhance management of critical risks, preparedness for emergencies, and effectiveness of frontline safety controls.
• Analyze performance data to spot trends and recommend improvements.
• Support comprehensive incident investigations to derive lessons, strengthen controls, and prevent future occurrences.
• Champion continuous improvements in safety-related systems, processes, and culture.
• Develop and maintain strong partnerships with operational personnel, contractors, and key stakeholders.
• Work alongside the broader SHW and Infrastructure SHW Teams to embed KiwiRail’s Line-Led Safety philosophy into routine operational decisions.

Requirements

• Proven SHW experience within rail infrastructure, construction, transport, utilities, or comparable high-risk sectors.
• Deep understanding of risk management principles and the application of safety controls in field operations.
• Demonstrated ability to influence and mentor leaders in operational environments.
• Experience in supporting incident investigations and driving continuous safety improvements.
• Comfortable working across several sites with frontline teams, building trusted relationships.
• Excellent communication skills and proven stakeholder management capabilities.
• Relevant SHW credential such as NEBOSH or an equivalent qualification.
• Possession of a full New Zealand Driver’s Licence and readiness to travel frequently.

Additional Information

Work Locations: Flexible options including Wellington (Upper Hutt/Wallaceville) or Palmerston North.
