Job description

Role overview

This position is responsible for routine janitorial care and upkeep of buildings and facilities at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia. The work involves frequent movement as well as bending, lifting, and reaching throughout the day.

Core duties

  • Clean and maintain furniture, fixtures, furnishings, floors, walls, and other building surfaces.
  • Move furniture and equipment when needed to support cleaning or facility upkeep.
  • Empty waste containers, sort materials, and prepare items for appropriate disposal.
  • Wash glass surfaces that can be cleaned without scaffolds or other safety devices.
  • Sanitize washrooms and restock them with the necessary supplies.
  • Use hand tools and power tools, and carry out basic maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Request cleaning supplies and materials as needed and store them for later use.
  • Report damaged furniture, fixtures, or other facility issues that need repair.
  • Help maintain cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security in assigned areas.
  • Perform other related tasks as required, including the occasional operation of a light truck in support of these duties.

Knowledge and experience

The role requires practical familiarity with cleaning tools, materials, equipment, methods, and techniques used in building cleaning. This may be gained through prior on-the-job experience or through formal training.
