Position Summary
The Service Manager will be pivotal in overseeing shop and field repairs, including testing and modifying engines. This role entails managing field technicians' performance through KPIs, service software, customer input, and training, while upholding a high standard of customer service and representing the DEUTZ brand with professionalism. The candidate should be proactive in expanding their expertise about the company's operations, products, markets, and clientele. Leadership in maintaining safety and operational efficiency is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and coordinate shop and field technicians, ensuring timely scheduling, quoting, and invoicing of service jobs.
- Supervise all workshop and field operations, including comprehensive documentation per job.
- Manage procurement of parts and materials necessary for workshop and field work.
- Collaborate with sales and project management on value-added product modifications for new engine units.
- Inspect and analyze engine failures, clearly communicating repair requirements to customers.
- Repair engines damaged during shipping or handling processes.
- Conduct dynamometer engine testing as needed.
- Perform engine modifications involving component removal or installation.
- Oversee assembly and testing of upgraded engine packages.
- Coordinate with Material Coordinator and Planner regarding assembly project needs.
- Contribute to line layout, equipment, and assembly process enhancements for value-added and repair tasks.
- Maintain specialized tooling to meet corporate standards in both workshop and field environments.
- Adapt and perform effectively in a fast-paced setting, meeting deadlines under pressure.
- Report field activities and propose enhancements for DEUTZ products and policies.
- Support engine application and installation inspections.
- Facilitate and assist in technical training for distributors, dealers, OEMs, rental firms, and end-users.
- Manage administrative duties, including call reports, itineraries, expense claims, budgeting, forecasting, and other operational requests.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Expertise in 12- and 24-volt electrical systems.
- Proficient knowledge of diesel engine fuel systems and troubleshooting engine issues.
- Ability to interpret and follow complex assembly guidelines.
- Understanding of torque specifications and special assembly procedures.
- Capability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes.
- Familiarity with hand and power tools.
- Effective management skills to handle multiple territories and multitask efficiently.
Supervisory and Travel Expectations
The role includes leadership responsibilities over a team. Domestic and international travel is anticipated to be between 10% and 25%, subject to business needs.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma required.
- At least five years of relevant management experience, plus five years in the diesel industry.
- Self-directed with the ability to complete tasks without close supervision.
- Preferred: Completion of all DEUTZ training programs.
- Preferred: Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), SAP, and Field Aware software.
Physical and Working Conditions
Work occurs in manufacturing assembly and warehouse settings, which expose the employee to noise, dust, diesel fuel, oil, and extreme temperatures without air conditioning. Office areas maintain a quieter environment.
