Job description
Role overview
This position supports underground mining operations by installing and maintaining essential services and helping with related support tasks across the mine. The role includes fitting air and water lines, dewatering systems, ventilation fans and ducting, extending cables and firing lines, grouting and tensioning cable bolts, working with underground pumps, and assisting with heading preparation and material movement. The job also involves operating light vehicles and other underground utility equipment as required, while carrying out any additional tasks assigned by the Shift Supervisor.
Key accountabilities
- Maintain a strong focus on zero-harm safety practices, use hazard identification tools such as Take 5, report incidents and damage, and follow all underground standard operating procedures.
- Install underground service lines, including air, water and dewatering lines, and position them according to site standards with droppers raised above ground level.
- Set up secondary ventilation fans in the approved location and extend ventilation bags to the required distance from the face.
- Support underground pumping activities by setting electrical submersible pumps in sumps or declines, securing cables clear of the floor, and checking that pumps remain operational.
- Clean and inspect mono pumps, including drain valves, tanks, step ladders, landing platforms and all pipe connections.
- Carry out safe installation, grouting and tensioning of cable bolts, including cable insertion, collar sealing, grout preparation and housekeeping after completion.
- Handle electrical cable installation and retrieval, ensuring cables are correctly suspended, protected from mobile equipment, and clearly marked where required.
- Operate underground machinery such as articulated dump trucks, integrated tool carriers and light vehicles for transporting materials and personnel underground.
- Prepare headings by selecting and moving the right ground support materials, towing mesh, placing support items correctly and delivering lifter tubes for drilling.
- Collect and deliver tools, consumables and equipment to and from underground stores, return unused support materials, move personnel as needed, and help manage underground laydown stock.
Requirements
- Secondary school education must be completed.
- Formal vocational training from a recognized institution is required.
- A valid Tanzanian driving licence is required.
- A valid blasting licence will be considered an advantage.
- The candidate must be able to drive within a mining environment.
- Between 0 and 2 years of operational experience in an underground mining setting is expected.
- Experience driving manual transmission vehicles is required.
- Prior exposure to operating underground utility vehicles is needed.
- Background working underground as an offsider or nipper is required.
- Strong understanding of the Job Safety Analysis tool is expected.
- Good reporting ability, clear cross-shift communication, solid work planning and execution skills, and the ability to coach new team members are important.
- Ability to operate an Integrated Tool Carrier is required.
Additional information
The role is based in Geita, Geita, Tanzania and is a full-time onsite opportunity. The successful candidate may also be asked to perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

The position includes the use of underground light vehicles and utility equipment, and requires the ability to work safely in a mining site environment.
