Senior Sybase DBA (L3)

Role summary

This position calls for a senior Sybase database administrator to own advanced support, architecture, and escalation handling for Sybase ASE used for OLTP workloads and Sybase IQ used for analytics and data warehousing. The role focuses on keeping production stable, improving performance, resolving complex issues, managing major changes, and guiding junior database administrators.

L3 production support and escalation

• Serve as the highest-level support contact for serious incidents affecting Sybase ASE and Sybase IQ.
• Drive root cause analysis and ensure lasting corrective measures are put in place.
• Be available for on-call and weekend coverage during high-priority incidents and major operational tasks.
• Track SLA commitments carefully and identify risks before they become outages.

Sybase ASE administration

• Install, configure, and upgrade Sybase ASE systems.
• Own backup, restore, and recovery planning and execution.
• Support high availability and disaster recovery setups, including warm standby and Replication Server.
• Handle security administration, role management, and auditing.
• Carry out advanced tuning work such as query improvement, stored procedure tuning, cache and memory adjustments, TempDB and I/O tuning, plus blocking and deadlock analysis.
• Support application deployments and production releases.

Sybase IQ administration

• Administer and support Sybase IQ environments.
• Plan and refine indexing approaches, including HG, LF, and Bitmap indexes.
• Support ETL pipelines and very large data platforms.
• Improve analytical query performance and reporting workloads.
• Handle upgrades, patching, and platform migrations.

Change, upgrade, and disaster recovery management

• Lead database version upgrades and patch deployments.
• Carry out platform and storage migration activities.
• Execute disaster recovery tests, failover, and failback exercises.
• Review change plans as well as rollback approaches.
• Validate changes after implementation and share outcome reports.

Automation and documentation

• Build scripts for monitoring, routine maintenance, and health checks.
• Maintain SOPs, runbooks, and other operational documents.
• Promote standard operating practices and ongoing process improvements.

Leadership and collaboration

• Coach and support L1 and L2 DBAs.
• Represent the Sybase subject matter expertise in client meetings, audits, and architecture reviews.
• Work closely with application, infrastructure, storage, and SAP vendor teams.
