Job description
Position summary
We are looking for a Lead/Senior Release Manager to own the full release governance model across enterprise initiatives. The role centers on coordinating complex software rollouts across multiple teams while ensuring every deployment aligns with regulatory obligations, internal quality controls, and formal change management processes.
This position calls for a detail-oriented leader who is strong in risk reduction, structured change control, and stakeholder coordination. You will act as the final checkpoint for production releases, making sure speed of delivery never compromises stability, security, or audit readiness.
Key responsibilities
- Set up, maintain, and enforce release governance standards and go-live criteria across engineering and product teams.
- Ensure release activities meet applicable regulatory and internal security requirements, with documentation kept complete and audit-ready.
- Lead or chair Change Advisory Board meetings, present release scope, assess business impact, defend release readiness, and obtain formal approval for production changes.
- Evaluate release risks in depth by reviewing dependencies, architecture impacts, and possible business interruptions.
- Require detailed deployment runbooks, validated rollback approaches, and business continuity measures before any production deployment.
- Oversee staging and test environment readiness so that non-production systems closely reflect production and reduce configuration mismatches.
- Own the master release calendar, including deployment windows and blackout periods across the enterprise.
- Run formal go/no-go reviews with senior stakeholders, product leaders, and engineering teams, and stop a release when compliance or quality expectations are not met.
- Manage escalation during deployment windows and coordinate immediate remediation for release-related production issues.
- Lead root-cause analysis after incidents and use findings to strengthen controls and prevent repeat failures.
- Maintain a complete chain of custody from code commit through production release, with all automated and manual test evidence properly logged.
- Communicate release status, risks, compliance position, and deployment plans clearly to executives and operational teams.
Requirements
- 7 to 10+ years of experience in software release management, change management, or IT operations, preferably in a regulated environment such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, finance, or aerospace.
- Hands-on experience managing releases under regulatory standards such as GxP validation, privacy laws, or financial controls.
- Strong command of formal change management practices, CAB workflows, and release documentation standards.
- Experience coordinating dependencies across multiple delivery streams in scaled Agile environments such as SAFe or similarly large program structures.
- Solid familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps, along with Git-based version control and embedded compliance/security checks.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and decision-making abilities, including the confidence to uphold quality and compliance requirements under delivery pressure.
- Preferred certifications include ITIL v3/v4 Foundation or Managing Professional, SAFe Agilist, Release Train Engineer, Certified ScrumMaster, PMP, CISA, or CRISC.
