Job Overview
The Senior Registrar in ICU is tasked with delivering expert patient care to those admitted in the Intensive Care Unit, maintaining high professional standards aligned with evidence-based medicine, medical ethics, Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) standards, hospital regulations, and the Saudi Ministry of Health laws.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure superior quality medical treatment, compassionate care, and understanding to all patients within National Medical Care Hospitals and Clinics.
- Provide patient care that aligns strictly with the professional scope and clinical privileges for inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Adhere to clinically relevant and scientifically validated standards, guidelines, and criteria in practice.
- Conduct frequent ward rounds independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop patient-specific treatment plans.
- Keep patient management documentation accurate, legible, timely, and comprehensive, including medical records, discharge summaries, death reports, and other special reports as needed.
- Assist senior consultants in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures pertaining to the specialty.
- Oversee junior staff and guide their duties within departmental directives.
- Participate actively in ongoing educational and training sessions of the department.
- Perform diagnostic and treatment procedures within the defined medical specialty.
- Assess and appropriately refer patients for further care or accept referrals within the specialty field.
- Fulfill on-call responsibilities for patient care and admissions.
- Respond promptly to emergencies and provide specialist advice during critical situations.
- Maintain patient privacy, security, and confidentiality rigorously.
- Supervise registrar staff and consult with consultants for complex cases requiring advanced expertise.
- Comply fully with departmental policies, hospital by-laws, and regulatory frameworks.
- Carry out related administrative and organizational duties as assigned by consultants or department heads.
- Support hospital administration and department directives consistent with professional knowledge and skills.
Reporting and Collaboration
Reports directly to the Head of the Internal Medicine Department and Consultant In-charge of ICU/CCU. Collaborates with specialty consultants, nursing and healthcare teams, patients, and family members. Supervises registrars, residents, nurses, and other paramedical staff assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Educational Requirement: Must possess either American Board certification, Canadian Fellowship, MRCP, or equivalent credentials.
- Registration as a Senior Registrar with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties is mandatory.
- Preferably holds higher qualifications in the specialty.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in the relevant field.
- Must hold a current valid medical practice license in the specialty area.
- Additional experience in a relevant sub-specialty and academic affiliation is advantageous.
Additional Skills and Requirements
- Strong leadership and administrative capabilities.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
- Ability to communicate in Arabic is preferred.
- Demonstrates professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Well-versed in medical by-laws and regulatory standards.
