Role overview
This permanent staff position is based onshore in Doha, Qatar, within a joint venture operating company supporting the Al Shaheen Oil & Gas Field. The role follows a residential arrangement with a 5-day working week and focuses on maintaining and improving the reliability of a large pump population across the field.
Key scope of work
- Shape and refine the fieldwide maintenance approach for pumps, including spare parts planning and stock control for more than 200 pumps.
- Own the planning and delivery of overhaul campaigns for production and safety-critical pumps, with annual OPEX responsibility in the USD 7–10 million range.
- Serve as a subject-matter expert for pump and system performance, pinpointing reliability, availability, and efficiency gaps and driving improvement actions.
- Coordinate preparation, execution, repair, and troubleshooting activities across short-, medium-, and long-term planning windows of 5 weeks, 4 months, and 2 years.
- Contribute inputs for annual operating and long-range capital budgets covering maintenance work and capital spare parts strategy.
- Lead specialist contractors for onshore repairs and offshore interventions, ensuring performance, quality, and compliance.
- Maintain routine engagement with Offshore/Site Leadership, onshore teams, and external vendors/OEMs.
Accountabilities
The role carries accountability for keeping required operational availability while overseeing the safe design, rollout, and execution of planned preventive maintenance programs for pumps across all assets. It also includes end-to-end responsibility for corrective maintenance planning and execution in close coordination with planners, procurement, warehouse, campaign/shutdown teams, field operations, inspection, maintenance disciplines, offshore stakeholders, the operations centre manager, and maintenance coordinators.
What you will do
- Build and sustain an incident-free working environment by promoting a strong safety culture.
- Protect the HSE performance of employees, contractors, and all parties working under the area of responsibility; hold contractor service quality meetings on site when needed.
- Ensure adherence to HSE laws, company standards, and internal procedures, with emphasis on personal safety, compliance, and environmental care.
- Advise site and offshore teams on pump and rotating equipment maintenance, including troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technical investigations.
- Support base operations by defining work scopes for pump overhaul and repair, maintaining daily communication with operations coordinators, and resolving technical and administrative issues.
- Develop and maintain effective maintenance strategies for pumps, including coordination with vendors and support for spares, tooling, procedures, work packs, and work-order resourcing.
- Prepare work packs and work orders for campaign and shutdown execution, ensuring readiness against gate criteria and resource plans.
- Manage repair activities for critical rotating equipment and pumps, including visits to vendor workshops and warehouses, and verify contractor execution and quality control.
- Review maintenance strategy effectiveness for inspection, maintenance, and operation of pumps and rotating equipment, identifying opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, and cost.
- Take part in vendor and contract audits when required.
- Carry out Class 2 modifications in accordance with company processes and standards.
- Oversee repairs, overhauls, and maintenance of all pumps as contract representative, including cost control and service provider performance.
- Issue and revise permutation/test schedules to balance running-hour risk, maintain standby availability, and strengthen performance monitoring.
- Make sure overhaul certificates are archived correctly in shared drives, SAP work orders, and MANASA where applicable.
- Verify and record certificates for spare parts intended for offshore use before shipment through logistics.
- Coach and develop Qatari personnel in line with individual development plans.
- Step into the Tier 2 Mechanical/Rotating Maintenance Engineer role on an interim basis when needed.
- Share best practices across the organization and support standardization between assets where practical.
- Join crisis response training and assist during emergency response situations when required.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution is required.
Experience and technical background
The position calls for at least 10 years of relevant oil and gas experience, including substantial work with rotating equipment and pump systems in a senior capacity. Candidates should bring deep knowledge of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, lifecycle management, troubleshooting, maintenance execution, and reliability improvement. Practical use of CMMS and maintenance planning tools is expected, along with strong familiarity with process safety, industry standards, and company HSE procedures.
Skills and professional strengths
Successful candidates will be comfortable working in a multicultural, highly specialized, and operationally demanding environment. They should be able to partner across disciplines, communicate effectively with peers and senior leaders, and prepare clear technical reports and recommendations. Strong analytical thinking, sound judgment under pressure, and advanced written and spoken English are essential. Industry certifications or training in rotating equipment, reliability engineering, or maintenance practices will be an added advantage.
