Senior Policy Planner

Overview

Join Auckland Council’s Planning and Resource Consents department to play a pivotal role influencing environmental policy and planning throughout Auckland's central and southern isthmus. This senior-level position contributes significantly to the upcoming review of the Auckland Unitary Plan amidst important legislative reforms related to planning and the natural environment.

Key Duties

• Deliver well-informed, high-quality planning advice to elected officials, Mana Whenua, the community, and various partners.
• Drive the implementation and review of Auckland’s Unitary Plan as part of a comprehensive policy approach.
• Lead and collaborate on teams managing national direction, legislative submissions, council-initiated and private plan changes, and notices of requirement.
• Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the Unitary Plan as part of the full policy cycle.
• Engage with internal and external partners to assist in the creation of spatial plans.

Candidate Profile

• Holds a degree or higher qualification coupled with substantial expertise in planning and resource management.
• Possesses a strong understanding of the Resource Management Act and recent legislative reforms related to planning and environment.
• Experienced in statutory planning, including preparing and reporting on plan reviews and notices of requirement.
• Skilled in building relationships, mentoring colleagues, providing excellent customer service, and navigating political environments.
• Knowledgeable about financial and project management practices at the project level.
• Demonstrates appreciation for te ao Māori perspectives and familiarity with Auckland Council’s commitments under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Additional Information

• This role offers a hybrid working model with flexibility and the option to purchase an additional week of leave.
• Salary ranges from $105,579 to $130,000 per annum, including employer KiwiSaver contributions.
• This position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
• A full driver’s license is mandatory.
