The role is based in London and follows a hybrid working pattern: 3 days in the office and 2 days working from home.

Role overview

This is a senior leadership position with responsibility for strong accounting policy oversight, governance of complex financial models, high-quality financial reporting, and effective audit coordination. The role also supports the integrity of the bank’s financial statements and provides senior stakeholders with clear financial insight.

You will lead a team of finance professionals and work closely with the Finance Director, CFO, and executive stakeholders to promote technical excellence, sound governance, and continuous improvement across the Finance function.

Financial accounting and reporting

  • Maintain and enhance group accounting policies and technical accounting guidance.
  • Review and interpret financial performance to assist senior leaders including the FD, CFO, and CEO.
  • Support reporting for senior executives, stakeholders, and board-level committees.

Technical accounting and models

  • Oversee complex financial models such as hedge accounting, effective interest rate, and amortised cost calculations.
  • Ensure strong governance, monitoring, and ongoing improvement of accounting models.
  • Lead updates to technical accounting requirements and the rollout of new reporting standards.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise on important accounting issues affecting the bank.

Impairment and credit risk accounting

  • Manage Stage 3 individually assessed impairment models for defaulted property loan exposures.
  • Work with Property and Finance leadership to ensure suitable provisioning and governance.
  • Contribute oversight and constructive challenge to impairment methods and results.

Governance, risk, and controls

  • Own the Finance control risk assessment framework.
  • Support governance forums including the Impairment & Evaluation Committee and the Accounting Policy & Regulatory Reporting Committee.
  • Design and implement controls that improve the accuracy of financial data and calculations.
  • Drive ongoing improvements in finance systems and processes.

Audit and external relationships

  • Lead the full audit cycle for year-end and interim audits.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and advisors.
  • Ensure audit points and technical accounting issues are resolved promptly.

Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop qualified and part-qualified accountants.
  • Give clear direction, performance feedback, and development support to the team.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing finance culture.

Requirements

  • Qualified accountant status such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Substantial experience in finance or audit, ideally gained in financial services.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, especially in banking.
  • Proven track record in financial reporting, audit management, and accounting governance.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage stakeholders effectively.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organisational ability.
  • Retail banking experience is preferred.
  • Experience with finance systems and general ledger platforms is an advantage.

Perks and benefits

  • Performance bonus linked to individual and company results.
  • Generous contributory pension via Hargreaves Lansdown.
  • Life assurance cover.
  • 28 days of holiday, plus the option to buy or sell 5 additional days.
  • An extra paid volunteering day.
  • Private healthcare through BUPA.
  • Free access to BHSF Rise EAP for health and wellbeing support.
