About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Senior Environmental Specialist specializing in seabirds to join the Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit. This role centers on fieldwork across Auckland with a focus on seabird ecology and conservation, playing a vital role in preserving biodiversity in the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct fieldwork activities for the Seabird Monitoring and Research Programme.
  • Coordinate logistics for monitoring locations, including remote and pest-free island sites.
  • Ensure all necessary permits and approvals for field operations are in place.
  • Perform hands-on seabird monitoring including handling, banding, and biological sample collection.
  • Maintain strict adherence to biosecurity and health and safety protocols.
  • Manage data processing, validation, and database maintenance for field-collected information.
  • Assist with data analysis, interpretation, and compilation of reports.

Candidate Profile

  • Degree holder in ecology, environmental science, or equivalent work experience.
  • Practical experience in handling seabirds for research, with a Department of Conservation Bird Banding Permit L2+.
  • Physically fit and capable of working in diverse terrain and weather, including hiking with a backpack for long durations.
  • Proven experience managing field expeditions to remote and challenging locations.
  • Strong organizational and communication abilities, able to collaborate with iwi, landowners, and diverse stakeholders.
  • Possess a valid and clean driver's license.
  • Capable of following safety-sensitive protocols including successful pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Open to overnight stays on remote islands as required by fieldwork.

Job Details

  • Position Type: Temporary, Full-Time
  • Work Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Start Date: October 2026
  • End Date: February 2027
  • Pay Rate: $51 per hour plus 8% holiday pay
  • Location: Auckland City Centre base with fieldwork throughout the Auckland region
