Senior Engineering Manager, Developer Productivity

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to drive advancement in developer productivity at MongoDB by leading teams and initiatives aimed at enhancing the software development lifecycle with measurable impact. This position is open for remote work within Canada.

Team and Role Context

The role is part of the AXIS team (AI, X-functional tools, Insights, and Signals), responsible for managing metrics and observability infrastructures within our developer environment. The focus includes fostering a data-driven culture and contributing to AI-enabled development tools.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum of 4 years in managing software engineering teams, including recruitment, performance review, growth planning, and compensation management.
• At least 8 years of hands-on experience building and operating production software systems, preferably with experience in developer tooling, platform engineering, observability, or data engineering.
• Proven ability to lead effectively in ambiguous situations and coordinate across various teams with limited supervision.
• Strong customer-centric mindset with practical problem-solving skills.
• Experience in building analytics, data pipelines, and metrics platforms.
• Involvement in AI tools development and enabling engineering productivity improvements.
• Technical acumen to assess trade-offs, comprehend risks, and lead strategically without daily coding responsibilities.
• Capable of linking observability and engineering metrics with AI-driven enhancements in the developer ecosystem.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with engineers, peer management, and senior leadership.
• History of developing inclusive and high-performing engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor engineering teams to promote innovation, collaboration, quality, and continuous improvement.
• Enhance engineering visibility and decision-making by delivering systems and reports that illuminate software development lifecycle performance.
• Evaluate and implement AI-enhanced tools and interfaces aimed at improving engineering productivity with clear metrics and thorough deployment planning.
• Collaborate with senior technical staff and stakeholders to craft and execute a balanced 12-month product roadmap addressing immediate and strategic platform initiatives.

Performance Goals

• Within the first month: Gain familiarity with team structures, projects, and stakeholders; build trust with direct reports and identify key execution risks.
• Within three months: Achieve notable improvements in at least one area of impact demonstrating adoption, reliability, or satisfaction, and establish strong partnerships with peers and leadership.
• Within twelve months: Complete a full growth cycle for the team, develop a strategic plan across domains, and drive measurable enhancements in engineering effectiveness and developer experience across MongoDB.

Compensation

The salary range for this role based in Canada is CAD 191,000 to 265,000, unique to each candidate and inclusive of MongoDB's total compensation package which encompasses equity, stock purchase programs, and other benefits like paid time off and healthcare coverage.
