Senior Director of Research and Development

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced leadership figure to serve as Senior Director of R&D for an internationally operating, technology-focused corporate group. This role encompasses full accountability for a multidisciplinary development organization and is pivotal in advancing the company’s technology strategy, organizational design, and overall innovation capability. Currently, the organization is undergoing significant transformation and growth, placing strong emphasis on effective change management, team evolution, and aligning the development organization with future market and customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Hold comprehensive responsibility for the research and development function at the German location and for international development teams.
• Lead and enhance multidisciplinary groups involved in product development, process development, tool design, hardware and software engineering, and metrology.
• Design and implement a forward-thinking technology and innovation strategy.
• Oversee intricate product development projects from conceptualization through to market launch.
• Refine organizational structures, development processes, and methodologies within a global matrix organization framework.
• Promote a performance-driven corporate culture emphasizing innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Identify and assess emerging technologies, market trends, and potential business opportunities.
• Lead technical due diligence initiatives related to mergers and acquisitions.
• Proactively guide transformation and change programs.

Candidate Profile

• Successfully completed degree in engineering, physics, or a related technical discipline; completion of a PhD is advantageous.
• Several years of leadership experience in internationally oriented, technology-driven development organizations.
• Proven record managing complex product development and innovation programs.
• Strong expertise in change management and organizational development.
• Experience in fields such as life sciences, medical technology, photonics, precision technology, or comparable high-tech sectors.
• Ability to translate strategic objectives into operational execution.
• Skilled at guiding teams through change processes and fostering sustainable acceptance.
• Entrepreneurial mindset combined with analytical capabilities and pragmatic execution skills.
• Fluency in German and English at a negotiation level.
• Willingness to travel internationally approximately 30% of the time.
