Position Overview

As Senior Director of Alumni Engagement, you will play a pivotal role in nurturing lifelong connections between Indiana University and its alumni through the Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA). This leadership position involves managing a skilled team that engages alumni volunteers via domestic chapters, affiliate groups, affinity communities, and emerging engagement methods. You will drive a transformative shift from traditional event-centric engagement to a modern, audience-focused approach prioritizing inclusion, volunteer leadership development, and creating meaningful alumni involvement pathways.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team responsible for engaging varied alumni volunteer groups.
  • Develop and execute an audience-first engagement strategy enhancing a sense of belonging among alumni.
  • Manage a portfolio of alumni communities, facilitating scalable and tailored engagement approaches.
  • Collaborate with IU campuses, advancement teams, and volunteer leaders to align engagement initiatives with institutional priorities.
  • Balance strategic planning with hands-on management and execution of programs.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven track record in leading volunteer engagement initiatives and cultivating thriving volunteer communities.
  • Strong leadership qualities with experience coaching high-performing teams fostering trust, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Expertise in implementing organizational change and new strategies or operating models.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration across departments, senior leadership, and external partners.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficient in data-driven decision-making and using audience insights for continuous improvement.
  • Experience with CRM platforms, Microsoft Office, virtual collaboration, and engagement technologies.
  • Capacity to travel occasionally and work select evenings or weekends to support events.

Educational and Professional Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least eight years of progressively responsible experience in alumni relations, volunteer or community engagement, nonprofit leadership, higher education, or a related discipline.
  • Experience managing staff, budgets, and leading strategic projects.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

Additional Information
