Job description
About the role
In this position, you will shape the tooling, environments, and platforms that help IDEXX engineers build, test, and release software more efficiently. Working from the Auckland R&D hub, your focus will be on making everyday development smoother through dependable, scalable, and easy-to-use engineering systems.
You will support the Veterinary Software division, which contributes to IDEXX’s broader goal of delivering a leading vertical SaaS platform for animal health. From the global Software Centre of Excellence, teams design, build, and run cloud-native systems used by veterinary professionals around the world. This role partners closely with multiple teams to refine developer workflows, align tooling, and support modern engineering practices, including AI-assisted development.
What you will do
- Improve developer productivity by finding friction points and delivering tooling that scales well.
- Take ownership of internal platforms such as CI/CD pipelines, testing systems, and developer environments.
- Set up and evolve observability approaches, including monitoring, alerting, and dashboards.
- Build cloud-native solutions with AWS and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
- Contribute to technical decisions that strengthen scalability, reliability, and performance.
- Promote consistent engineering standards and best practices across teams.
- Work with developers to understand their needs and treat internal teams like customers.
- Support the move toward modular, domain-oriented system design.
- Create platforms that are resilient, observable, and straightforward to run at scale.
- Evaluate and introduce AI-enabled development tools and workflows where they improve output.
- Spot opportunities to automate work and raise engineering efficiency.
- Produce clean, maintainable code with strong test coverage.
- Help drive mature engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, and DevSecOps.
What you need to succeed
You should bring strong experience in modern programming languages such as Go, TypeScript, PHP, or similar. A solid background with AWS and infrastructure-as-code, especially Terraform, is essential. You also need a deep understanding of cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, and contemporary design principles.
Experience improving developer workflows, tools, or internal platforms will be important, along with strong problem-solving ability and a practical approach to system optimisation. You should be comfortable with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevSecOps methods. Clear communication, good planning, and the ability to deliver independently are also key. A genuine interest in developer experience, knowledge sharing, and ongoing improvement is highly valued.
Nice to have
- Experience in fast-moving SaaS environments at scale.
- Familiarity with observability platforms such as Datadog or similar tools.
- Exposure to AI-assisted development tools and newer engineering practices.
Benefits and perks
- Competitive pay with incentive opportunities.
- Ongoing learning and development, both internally and externally.
- Hybrid-style working environment with a collaborative office space, gym, and rooftop meeting area.
- Coffee, fresh fruit, and Food Truck Fridays.
- Dog-friendly workplace.
- Fully subsidised Southern Cross health insurance.
- Partially subsidised parking.
- Career growth opportunities in a global organisation.
