Job description
Role overview
The Senior Design Manager for Landscape leads landscape design governance across projects, making sure the output aligns with client expectations, project goals, and applicable regulations. Working in a Project Management Consultancy (PMC) setting, this role blends design leadership, technical review, and landscape knowledge to help deliver coordinated, sustainable, and high-quality landscape solutions.
Key responsibilities
- Direct the landscape design process from early concept development through detailed design and construction-stage support.
- Coordinate landscape work with architectural, civil, utilities, infrastructure, and MEP disciplines to maintain full project integration.
- Evaluate consultant-submitted landscape packages to confirm they meet scope, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Run regular design reviews and clash checks to ensure coordination between all project disciplines.
- Build, track, and manage the landscape design schedule so it stays aligned with the overall project programme.
- Advise on planting plans, irrigation, grading, drainage, and hardscape design.
- Assess landscape concepts for usability, sustainability, and visual quality.
- Promote the selection of suitable plant species, including native, climate-appropriate, and low-maintenance options.
- Review environmental conditions such as soil, hydrology, and long-term maintenance considerations.
- Check that sustainable solutions are incorporated, including efficient water use and green infrastructure measures.
- Work with clients, authorities, and other stakeholders to secure approvals and maintain compliance.
- Attend technical meetings with consultants and contractors to resolve design-related issues.
- Contribute to project reporting with updates on landscape progress, issues, and risks.
- Track design changes and evaluate their effects on cost, schedule, and quality, including value engineering opportunities that protect design intent.
- Identify technical risks and help reduce design-related challenges.
- Support construction-stage activities by responding to RFIs and reviewing shop drawings.
- Oversee implementation to ensure the landscape is delivered as intended.
- Monitor site progress for landscaping works and coordinate with supervision teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or a closely related discipline.
- At least 12–15+ years of relevant experience, with substantial exposure to design management and landscape projects.
- Background in PMC, consultancy, or large-scale infrastructure and urban development projects.
- Strong understanding of landscape design principles, urban design, irrigation, grading, drainage, sustainability, and cross-discipline coordination.
- Demonstrated leadership and people management capability.
- Excellent stakeholder handling and coordination skills.
- Proficiency with design and coordination tools such as AutoCAD, BIM, and GIS.
- Strong knowledge of international standards, codes, and authority requirements.
- Good problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Ability to balance design quality, cost, and constructability.
- Must act as a client-side representative for landscape design oversight rather than the primary designer.
- Role emphasis is on review, governance, integration, and delivery assurance.
- Expected to ensure consultants provide coordinated, buildable, and compliant landscape designs.
