Role Overview
The Senior Commissioning Engineer – Telecommunications will lead and manage all pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up operations for telecommunications systems within oil and gas projects, particularly in offshore settings. Acting as the primary liaison between contractors and asset owners, this role ensures all telecom systems are installed, tested, and handed over in accordance with project specs, safety protocols, and operational standards. The position encompasses active involvement throughout the entire project lifecycle, from engineering and construction stages through final handover, emphasizing quality, safety, cost-effectiveness, and punctual delivery.
Technical Expertise
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with telecom systems including CCTV, PA/GA systems, radio communications (VHF/UHF/microwave), structured cabling, telephony systems such as IP phones and hotlines, AIS, e-Mustering, telemetry, and network management platforms. Familiarity with commissioning processes, FAT/SAT testing, engineering standards, HSE compliance, and QA/QC procedures is essential. Comprehensive knowledge of FEED and EPIC project execution, alongside contractor deliverable review and approval, is expected. Additionally, expertise or experience in Instrumentation and Control is considered a plus.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up operations ensuring telecom systems are tested, compliant, safe, and ready for handover.
- Serve as the crucial interface between contractors and asset owners.
- Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and aligned with quality and HSE requirements.
- Plan detailed commissioning strategies and manage associated risks to guarantee operational readiness.
- Oversee project phases including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and final handover.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams comprising engineers, technicians, contractors, and offshore personnel.
- Perform review and approval of engineering designs, drawings, commissioning documents, and certifications.
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues emerging during commissioning activities.
- Participate actively in HAZID, HAZOP, SIMOPS, audits, and other safety and risk mitigation exercises.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electronics & Communication or a closely related field.
- Over 15 years of experience in the Oil & Gas sector.
- At least 10 years specialized in telecommunications commissioning including offshore operations.
- Proven experience in FEED and EPIC project environments.
- Preferably holds Chartered Engineer status.
- Offshore safety certifications such as BOSIET or FOET are advantageous.
