Job description
About the Role
We are seeking a Scrum Master to support two Scrum teams within our Platform Delivery department based in London. These teams focus on internal technical work including backend development, Power BI dashboards, and managing databases. This role demands more than just facilitating ceremonies; it requires a proactive leader who connects delivery to broader business objectives, collaborating closely with the Lead Delivery Manager to coordinate across teams and resolve conflicts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all Scrum ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives, reviews, and backlog refinements while ensuring they remain purposeful and impactful.
- Identify and remove hindrances, collaborating with all stakeholders to maintain smooth project progress and document recurring issues.
- Coach teams on Scrum methodologies and foster a culture of continuous process improvement.
- Monitor and analyze delivery metrics like velocity, burndown, blockers, completion rates, effort logging, and capacity to guide decision-making.
- Encourage communication and alignment within and between teams, especially concerning dependencies.
- Shield teams from unnecessary disruptions and promote a positive working environment, recording interruptions for future mitigation.
- Align delivery with company goals by understanding organizational priorities and connecting team efforts to these outcomes.
- Assist the Lead Delivery Manager with planning, coordination, and reporting across multiple teams.
- Resolve conflicts, competing priorities, and inter-team dependencies, escalating issues with recommended solutions.
- Support backlog prioritization and clarification alongside the Lead Delivery Manager and Product Owner.
- Drive process refinement during company growth, partnering with leadership to implement and improve ways of working.
- Maintain and own Platform RAID logs and other key documentation.
Required Skills and Experience
- Approximately 2 to 3 years’ experience as a Scrum Master within technical delivery teams.
- Exposure to project or delivery management beyond basic Scrum ceremonies.
- A pragmatic understanding of Scrum that focuses on outcomes over strict adherence to process.
- Proven ability to coach teams through change and continuous improvement.
- Strong business acumen with the capability to see how team work connects to larger company goals.
- Comfort navigating ambiguous situations and flexibly adjusting to evolving role demands.
- Familiarity with delivery tools, especially Azure DevOps (experience preferred but not mandatory).
- Experience collaborating with distributed or cross-functional teams.
- Excellent organizational skills with capacity to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
- Proactive and analytical problem-solving mindset with attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, capable of explaining processes to technical and non-technical audiences and managing diverse stakeholder needs.
- Motivation by social impact and alignment with company mission.
- Scrum certification is advantageous but not required.
Key Competencies
- Servant leadership balanced with confident delivery management.
- Effective facilitation and coaching capabilities.
- Cross-team delivery coordination and planning expertise.
- Business and commercial insight.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Pragmatic adaptation over rigid process adherence.
- Empathy, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
- Commitment to ongoing improvement.
- Ability to influence without formal authority.
Benefits and Working Conditions
- Competitive salary with annual reviews.
- Work for a mission-driven organisation tackling major social issues.
- Flexible working hours that focus on delivering value rather than logging hours.
- Remote work possible, with occasional in-person team and client meetings.
- Opportunities for professional development and training.
- 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays.
- Company pension scheme.
- Private medical insurance coverage.
- Enhanced parental leave policies.
- Cycle to work scheme.
- Flu vaccination program.
- Eye tests and financial support for glasses for screen use.
- Employee assistance program including mental health support, remote GP access, counselling, physiotherapy, and access to second medical opinions.
