Job description

Overview

Rochedale State High School is looking for a capable, well-organised and experienced Science Technician to help run the science department efficiently. In this permanent full-time role, you will provide laboratory, technical, classroom and administrative assistance to science teaching staff so practical science lessons and STEM activities can be delivered safely and effectively.

About the school

The school is located near Brisbane’s CBD and has preserved a strong community feel from its former semi-rural setting. As the surrounding area continues to expand, the school remains attractive to families who appreciate its welcoming, connected and supportive culture. Its guiding vision celebrates performers at every stage and people developing their strengths across many areas. This is reinforced by the school motto of integrity and achievement, with students encouraged to grow academically, socially, physically and creatively in a community that values success, participation, openness, equality and integrity.

Role summary

You will support the Head of Department, teachers and laboratory staff through both technical and administrative work, helping ensure the science department runs smoothly. The role requires independent work within established directions and guidelines, and the department serves a large student cohort every day. You will also work alongside teachers and other science technicians to support learning outcomes, including helping in classrooms where required. Because science is a high-performing area of the school, current experience and a strong understanding of the role are important.

Key duties

  • Set up, prepare and look after laboratory equipment, chemicals, specimens and other teaching materials for practical science lessons.
  • Keep laboratories, preparation areas and storage rooms safe, orderly and compliant with health and safety expectations.
  • Handle chemicals responsibly, manage storage and disposal, maintain SDS documentation and keep laboratory records up to date.
  • Use, test, maintain and organise repairs for scientific equipment and related resources.
  • Assist teachers and students during practical work, demonstrations, excursions and STEM programs.
  • Maintain stock levels, inventory systems, asset registers and purchasing processes, including ordering supplies and monitoring budgets.
  • Help develop and review laboratory procedures, safety processes and compliance records.
  • Work with staff, suppliers, other schools and external organisations to strengthen science programs and improve student learning.

How to apply

  • Submit a short resume that includes contact details for two referees who can comment on your relevant work history.
  • Provide a two-page written response addressing the attached role description.
  • Include a copy of the mandatory qualifications and/or registration listed in the role description.

Additional information

This is a permanent full-time appointment. For progression roles, the salary range may cover two classifications, and the final level offered will depend on your skills and whether you meet the required criteria. Applicants are welcome to request any support needed to make the recruitment process accessible and inclusive. Applications will stay active for 12 months from the closing date and may be considered for similar or identical vacancies within the department. Recruitment agencies will not be accepted.
