Job description

Job Summary

This role involves ensuring the safe crossing of schoolchildren at designated road crossing points near school premises. The responsibilities include managing children's behavior at crossings, directing traffic safely, operating warning signals, and recognizing any roadside hazards to maintain public safety.

Main Responsibilities

  • Guide and control children's conduct while crossing designated roads.
  • Follow all guidelines outlined in the official Education Authority booklet for School Crossing Patrols.
  • Adhere strictly to health and safety legislation and regulations applicable in Northern Ireland, including the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 and relevant Codes of Practice.
  • Perform all tasks under usual job working conditions related to the role.
  • Accurately complete all required documentation associated with the job functions.
  • Undertake tasks within the competence level, which may include duties associated with similar or lower-grade jobs.

Candidate Requirements

  • Essential Criteria: Willingness to complete necessary job-related training, knowledge of road safety and traffic awareness, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, outstanding customer service orientation, and ability to follow procedures independently.
  • Desirable Criteria: Prior experience working with children or the public.

Selection Process and Notes

  • Shortlisting will be based on essential criteria demonstrated in the application form, with possible use of desirable criteria to manage candidate numbers.
  • Interviews will further assess skills and values consistent with the Education Authority's core values.
  • Applicants recommended for appointment in roles involving work with children will undergo an Enhanced Criminal Background Disclosure, with costs borne by the applicant.
