About the Role

Polaris Community is seeking a skilled caretaker to manage the upkeep and security of two small to medium-sized schools located in Batley and Huddersfield. This full-time role demands dedication to maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment for pupils and staff, contributing positively to their educational experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure cleanliness, safety, and security of school buildings and grounds.
  • Perform regular cleaning, routine maintenance, refurbishments, and minor repairs.
  • Oversee school cleaning staff and coordinate their tasks.
  • Promote and enforce health and safety standards throughout school sites.
  • Manage porterage duties such as relocating furniture and equipment.
  • Maintain school premises, furniture, and fittings, reporting issues to the Headteacher promptly.
  • Carry out small repair and DIY projects and arrange larger repairs by sourcing contractor quotes.
  • Handle daily cleaning tasks including litter collection and waste disposal.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning needs such as spillages and gritting.
  • Organize annual deep cleans for classrooms, staffrooms, kitchens, dining areas, and other frequently used spaces.
  • Maintain cleaning supplies and equipment inventory, ensuring timely replacements and adequate stock levels.
  • Manage locking and unlocking of buildings, including outside regular hours.
  • Conduct end-of-day checks on windows, doors, gates, lighting, and gas/electrical appliances.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in caretaking within a school setting.
  • Experience with building maintenance and security systems, including alarm handling.
  • Solid understanding of relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Basic competence in DIY tasks and repairs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with contractors and site visitors.
  • Proficient literacy and numeracy abilities.
  • Capability to work effectively in an environment serving children with social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Possession of a full driving license and access to a personal vehicle, with willingness to travel between sites.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual salary of £26,402.
  • 37.5 hours of work per week on a full-time contract basis.
  • Starting with 30 days of annual leave, increasing to 35 days with extended service.
