Job description

About the role

Amentum is looking for a Safety Specialist to support a specialized U.S. Navy program on Diego Garcia. The position focuses on building and maintaining a strong safety culture across operations, with the goal of keeping work incident-free and aligned with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Safety and Health Requirements Manual and other applicable safety standards.

What you will do

  • Support the creation, rollout, and ongoing improvement of a site-wide safety program that meets regulatory and operational requirements.
  • Carry out workplace safety inspections and prepare monitoring reports that measure compliance with safety expectations.
  • Investigate incidents in detail, identify underlying causes, and recommend corrective measures to reduce the chance of repeat events.
  • Update safety records and asset documentation by adding, changing, or removing entries as needed to keep records accurate.
  • Track safety-related activities and help ensure hazards are identified, controlled, and mitigated across operations.
  • Assess risks and apply corrective actions to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Train and advise employees on safe work practices, operational safety procedures, and compliance requirements.
  • Promote practical methods and best practices that help prevent accidents and support regulatory compliance.
  • Work with managers and other stakeholders so safety goals support broader operational objectives.
  • Stay current on safety regulations and industry best practices to strengthen and update the safety program over time.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants should have hands-on experience with safety program implementation, workplace inspections, and day-to-day safety operations. The role also requires the ability to prepare safety reports, investigate incidents, and manage documentation accurately. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Strong organization, analysis, administration, and attention to detail are important, along with familiarity with digital safety reporting and recordkeeping tools. Candidates must have a valid passport, be able to travel internationally, and have a passport that remains valid for at least one year at the time of hiring. They must also be able to pass contract medical requirements and stay compliant throughout the deployment.

Preferred qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related technical field is preferred. Additional value is placed on OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety and Health certification or an equivalent safety credential, as well as certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or a similar qualification. Experience in austere OCONUS environments and in multinational workplaces is beneficial, along with strong critical thinking, hazard analysis, problem-solving, and safety training experience.

Additional responsibilities

All employees are expected to help maintain a safe, high-quality, and procedure-compliant workplace. This includes completing required training, carrying out self-aid and buddy-aid duties where applicable, participating in emergency response tasks, and contributing to safety committees and teams. Employees must also follow Amentum’s Quality Policy and comply with all relevant quality system documents, contracts, and job-related safety, quality, and environmental procedures.

Workplace and compliance expectations

This role is based on Diego Garcia and is tied to a U.S. government-related program supporting the U.S. Navy. Candidates must be prepared for international deployment and for meeting ongoing contractual medical and compliance obligations throughout the assignment.
