Job Summary

Join Redpath Mining as a Safety Officer specializing in shaft sinking operations at our Jwaneng site in Botswana. This full-time onsite role involves ensuring a safe working environment by leading safety initiatives, compliance monitoring, and risk management in underground mining settings.

Core Responsibilities

  • Foster and uphold a safety culture centered on zero harm throughout all operational sectors.
  • Ensure strict adherence to company Safety, Health, Environment, Quality and Training (SHEQT) policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Carry out thorough workplace inspections and safety audits and lead risk assessments and hazard identification activities.
  • Oversee workplace condition monitoring to detect unsafe actions and environments.
  • Engage in environmental inspections and manage compliance obligations.
  • Promptly investigate and manage environmental incidents.
  • Educate and raise awareness among employees regarding their environmental and safety duties.
  • Guarantee compliance with relevant Botswana legislation including the Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act (Cap 44:02), Employment Act (Cap 47:01), environmental laws, company SHE standards, client requirements, and site rules.
  • Maintain all mandated SHE documentation and registers, managing certifications and legal appointments.
  • Support management with regulatory inspections by governmental bodies.
  • Enforce compliance with permit-to-work protocols and critical control processes.
  • Facilitate corrective actions from inspections, audits, and investigation outcomes.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into incidents, accidents, near misses, and dangerous events, including root cause analyses and reporting.
  • Monitor and report on the efficacy of safety interventions and training compliance.
  • Promote behavioral safety programmes and safety awareness initiatives.
  • Ensure operational compliance with approved safety procedures and high-risk work controls.
  • Participate actively in safety planning, operational risk reviews, and emerging risk identification, advising management accordingly.
  • Oversee contractor safety compliance, including induction, training, competency, inspections, audits, and adherence to site safety and permit systems.
  • Prepare periodic SHE performance reports highlighting opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of SHEQT policies and support continuous improvement and benchmarking efforts.
  • Encourage employee involvement in safety enhancement strategies.

Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum education: Matric certificate or equivalent.
  • Relevant safety qualification required.
  • Valid Botswana blasting license is essential.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in a shaft-sinking or underground mining environment.
  • Proven experience in incident investigations, audits, risk assessment, and hazard identification.
  • Capable of managing environmental compliance, emergency response preparedness, and SHE reporting systems.
  • Thorough understanding of Botswana mining legislation and related laws.
  • Experience overseeing ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001 management systems.
