Job description
Position overview
The Safety Officer role is focused on building and sustaining a workplace that is secure, healthy, and free from accidents. The person in this position will help ensure that safety systems, statutory requirements, and preventive practices are consistently followed across the plant.
Key responsibilities
- Support the Health & Safety Committee so that it meets regularly and operates effectively.
- Keep emergency readiness systems in place and functioning.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements under the Factories Act and Karnataka Factories Rules.
- Track PPE availability, including purchase records, issue logs, and stock levels.
- Maintain compliance with ISO and OHSAS 18001:2007 standards.
- Review workmen’s compensation insurance and plant safety records regularly, and suggest improvements where needed.
- Plan and monitor health and safety audits, along with follow-up action plans, on a scheduled basis.
- Conduct ESH training sessions in line with the SHE competency matrix.
- Carry out periodic safety inspections based on risk and severity.
- Provide EHS orientation and ongoing safety awareness updates to employees.
- Perform risk assessments, mitigation planning, and HIRA preparation.
- Encourage employee participation in safety-related initiatives.
- Maintain records for incidents, accidents, and near misses, including charts and preventive action follow-up.
- Organize fire-fighting mock drills at regular intervals.
- Prepare work permits, policies, and procedures aligned with local, state, and central regulatory requirements.
- Choose suitable safety equipment and support safety program execution.
- Report on Environmental Management System performance and take part in management reviews for continuous improvement.
- Assist in accident and injury investigations, including documentation for hearings, legal matters, and insurance reviews.
- Compile and file accident reports for regulatory submission.
- Maintain statutory health and safety registers and records.
- Prepare safety displays, promotional material, and supporting content for conferences and exhibitions.
- Keep safety files and documentation organized and current.
- Help conduct departmental safety meetings.
- Coordinate third-party health and safety audits.
- Track corrective actions from internal and external audits and follow up on improvement measures.
- Maintain records required for Environment, Health & Safety compliance.
- Ensure first aid, ambulance support, and occupational health centre readiness.
- Oversee contract labour health and safety practices.
- Support rollout of safety initiatives across the factory.
- Drive implementation of the EHS manual and keep SHE KPIs, including leading and lagging indicators, on track.
- Perform any other job-related duties assigned by management.
- Implement contractor safety protocols.
- Carry out routine inspections as part of the Safety Executive’s responsibilities.
- Ensure Gemba walks are completed according to the checklist and plan in the SHE Manual.
